Just picked up a a new to me Adventurewagen, that had the original galley removed, and a westy galley, sans fridge, installed.
Looking to get a chest fridge/freezer and wondering how people are powering it?
Not the battery setup, but where are you actually plugging in?
Was thinking of wiring a 12v outlet to the passenger pedestal, but would love to see what others have come up with
Cheers!

Several options to consider:
1. If you have an aux/house battery, you can simply add a fused 12v receptacle to connect the fridge power cord.
2. You can add a fused 12v receptacle to the primary battery — similar to what you suggest. Recommended while traveling only to avoid draining battery.
3. Purchase a rechargeable power station with adequate amp/hr rating to power the fridge directly. We use a 100w folding solar panel to recharge our power station.

Thanks, I have an aux bat setup, I'm more interested in where people are plugging in...surface mounted cigarette lighter outlet? Quick disconect plug, flush mounted outlet in the pedastal, cord run across the floor to the dash?
Wanna see what people have come up with.

Very common to install a receptacle on the B pillar near the sliding door.

When camped with power available we use the 120v receptacle on the Westy kitchen and place a small rug over the cord to keep from tripping.

A portable fridge should come with two power cords. One will have a male plug for a cigarette lighter-type receptacle, and the other will have a standard 120v plug (with transformer). Locate and wire a single or dual socket 12v receptacle (shown in MsTaboo’s post) where it works best for you. Your Adventurewagen likely already has a 120v interior receptacle if equipped with an external shoreline plug.

Consider using an Anderson Powerpole or other similar connector that does not wiggle loose with the bumps and vibration. I've found cigarette lighter plugs to not engage very well and often bump loose while driving.

I have been using an ARB Twist lock system-that plugs and locks securely into socket.

Can be mounted wherever you choose and keeps the connector secure.

I hadn't heard of this, connector, but never liked the ciggy lighter plugs. Was thinkin bout the plugs the solar panels use. Not sure what those are called. I'll look up the Anderson.
Cheers!

Here is mine, it had been the plan to plug in the fridge to it. The length of the fridge cable and that of the cig socket saw some voltage drop from my Aux fuse box to the fridge. I then hardwired (fused) the fridge to the battery and use my socket for the XM Boombox.

I installed the cigarette lighter type plug on kick panel of the bench seat. The cord from the fridge goes under the carpet and then up to the plug.

MC4 solar panel connectors are the most commonly used for solar panels. Get a crimper and make your own cables if that is better suited for you.

Been using the cig lighter plug since 2011, seems to work fine. Buy a good one and it lasts. The other plugs are good also, just that the cig type are cheap and universal for other items.

Whichever way you go be sure and figure a way to secure the fridge in case of crash. Since you've already been on one rollover you can probably relate! Shocked

I hardwired my fridge to my fuse panel. Wire is coming out from under the OG fridge location (Westy interior), under the rug, to the fridge. I plan to add an outlet one day.

I will probably add an SAE port when I do so - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GNMPZZG

When camped with power available we use the 120v receptacle on the Westy kitchen and place a small rug over the cord to keep from tripping.

This location for a receptacle also allows the fridge to be placed just outside the vehicle while plugged in when camping, creating more interior space…

I use Anderson Pole connectors all over the place. Not exactly cheap, but they make a good solid connection. Waterproof versions are now available as well.
