Before I let my frustration meter climb too high are there any tips for getting the rubber strip in the trim in the seat stand and keeping it there during installation. I spent 5 minutes poking it in, then seeing it pop out a second later in areas. I figured someone may have some wisdom to share.

I have found that the combination of mis- molded repro rubber and the usually banged around edges of what used to hold the trim edges--causes this iissue with many types of seals in many applications. What I do is get the qtips and black weatherstripping adhesive out and sparingly apply dabs of adhesive to unseen areas, et it dry about 8-10 minutes, then start pushing everything in. Do small sections at a time and put glue on both surfaces opposite itself, masking tape to hold it down till dry. I just installed hood seal on my 65 bug yesterday and believe me-- there wasn't any way that piece was gonna stay on by itself. a heat gun from HF may help. Use low-temp setting of course. (mine has two *
& high is too much! Also putting the mat in direct sun can do a lot. It's black. Should soak up heat & be more docile. |

This might be against the rules, but tapping the metal with a block and a medium hammer to close up the slot just a tad worked for me. _________________ 1974 Transporter

I was kind of wondering it that was by design myself. _________________ -Will

as I recall, the originals were glued on with something like a 3m spray and the edges went under the crimps. The crimps get opened up a little, the new mat edges slide in and then the metal gets gently tapped down like the last poster suggested. The tails slide under the floor mats front, maybe the walk thru and the back. The rot out after about 7 - 10 years if exposed to sun and ozone. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Yes, that makes sense. After sweeping out all the horse hair residue(that really is horse hair?), I could see old glue residue on the seat stand. _________________ -Will

Against the rules? Whose rules? It’s your car, hammer away and enjoy seat mats that never migrate.

OE mats were glued and had pie shaped reliefs cut as needed on the flap so they'd sit in the channel nicely. and yes, they were shoved in a whacked shut with a mallet _________________
