Got a family camping trip in Eminence in July. Wondering if I should take a buggy with me. The family isn't going there for that, but maybe I can sneak away if it's worth it... _________________ Brian H.

St. Joe State Park is definitely worth it in a buggy. I have had a lot of fun there. Depending on timing I could for sure head down there the same day. _________________ 1974 Chenowth 2RL #1244 Street Legal

A lot of things will have to line up for me to bring a buggy. I was hoping someone would say, nah, there's nothing of interest there and then I could make my wife happy and forget about it.
She kinda gave me the stink eye about it last night after I posted this and when we happened to be talking about the trip. It's really rare that my wife has a problem with something I decide to do and it took me off guard. I think a lot of it is she just doesn't want me to have so much work to do to get ready and I kinda agree. If it happens it happens, I said, but I'm not going to kill myself getting everything ready like I normally do for everything else.
July 23-27 we'll be on the Jack Fork river. It's a family gathering for my bro-in laws wife's family, but we are also going to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday while we have everyone together. So if she's giving me the signal I should probably use my head and forget about my selfish little needs. lol My 50th was last year and there was no fanfare which is actually fine with me. Happy wife, happy life.
Damn and Jimmy offered to meet me for a ride.. I'd really just like to see your buggy in action. One of the rigs I've always admired on the Samba.
I'm wanting to buy an older diesel F250 or GMC in the next month for her birthday. I want to get something maybe from Georgia where the trucks aren't rotted out like they are here. If we have that truck for the trip things will possibly change, otherwise I have an old V8 Grand Cherokee to pull things. I'd definetely have to finish my T-trailer project. On top of the Tacoma restoration, the new rear brake system on orange, and the house stuff I just don't know. I like to load my plate up that's for sure! _________________ Brian H.

How about a rv park near Royal Oak, MI ? Comfort inn is no longer an option. |
Wow that looks like a good time. hmm.
I'm not familiar with that side of the state. I did take a motorhome around the state one year and the closest to Detroit we stayed I think was Tawas State Park. I always prefered the state parks not for the luxury, but because they are all kept to the same standard and so no surprises. Usually no dump station or extra amenities either, but I rather boondock anyway. It was a lot of work, but I miss that thing. _________________ Brian H.

After some looking around, I think at the very least I'll have to go back just for some off roading and camping. Maybe 'MY' vacation next year. I didn't realise there was so much to do there. A lot like Michigan, really, but more woods less sand. _________________ Brian H.

My daughter lives there, about 1.5 blocks off of woodward. There is this little thing every year called the dream cruise. Had to knock that off of my bucket list last year. Stayed at the mentioned hotel in Clawson twice last year. Rear lot door broken on both trips. Wifes baked goods she brought for our daughter were on the desk and covered in ants the next morning. 3 nites and never got fresh bath towels. Never have liked staying in motels.
Jacks fork is nice. I believe it's warmer than the current. I prefer the current for the trout and smallmouth fishing. Both can get a little "rowdy" on summer weekends. Also turns out there is sich a thing as "paddling while intoxicated ". Keep your eyes open for the wild horses and the recently reintroduced elk. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

While in Eminence, I'm sure you're going canoeing, correct? While I lived in O'Fallon MO for 18 years, we frequented Eminence for the great rivers. Down there they call it "Floating", from MI, we call it canoeing, because we're in a canoe... Doesn't matter down in MO, EVERYTHING is FLOATING!
The Jack's Fork River and Current River are excellent for a lazy day on the water. Just a few little fast water, but nothing to worry about.
I saw tons of side by sides there, so I'm sure there's plenty of places to use them.
Have a great vacation!

Very. It's a great area to float/camp/wheel.
I expect I'll be at St. Joe quite a bit this year. Next trip is either May 31st or June 1st, but I'm taking ATV's for that round. |

The vacation was a fail.
I should know better than to vacation with a big group, especially one I hardly know. Won't ever do it again. Nothing turned out the way I had envisioned. The campground was a joke. I had to drive 20 minutes away to use the bathroom because I swore I wouldn't do it there it was such a dump(no pun intended). I developed a terrible sour stomach because of it. The heat was ridiculous and we didn't have the escape into the water like I had thought it would be. The river was right in front of us, but it we were camped on top of a steep hill that ran down to deep water. So it wasn't easy to get in or out. Then there was the communication. I'd hear about plans to do things five minutes before we were to leave. I started to get pissed feeling jerked around.
My wife's 27yo daughter decided to OD on whatever stupid crap drug she was abusing(w/Kratom?) and landed herself in the hospital back home, only a day or two into our trip. She is a manipulating head case sucking the life out of my wife. So my wife couldn't really enjoy herself. Her daughter had passed out in the bathroom of her apartment and laid there for an extended length of time and got compartment syndrome. That's where your muscles get damaged and swell up to an extreme extent and you lose the feeling in them and surgery has to be done. She's in the hospital and may never regain the full use of her arm and leg. The wife had to play this game like she didn't have cell phone coverage because she didn't want her daughter to know that she knew about it and therefore start crying about how we need to come home for her stupid ass.
Yeah. There was a lot of shit, frankly. Not Missouri's fault. Well except for the humidity. That was a killer. Being in a tent and not really being able to get any relief. I think I got food poisoning or something. My stomach was screwed up. Then all the jerking around. The one day we went tubing we weren't told but it was going to be for 7 hours and I was piloting a double tube with one oar with a wife with a broken shoulder who couldn't help in another double tube tied to mine along with two dogs and plenty of big stupid trees sticking out of the water in the rapids. My beagle almost drown at one point getting knocked off in the rapids as we scraped down a tree in the water. Did I mention we had to rush onto a bus in the morning so I didn't get to use the john. Had to crap that whole time with a rotten stomach. LOLOLOL yeah, no, if you haven't gotten the idea yet, I didn't have a good time. It sucked. Turns out these people never camped in that campground. They just got an opportunity to reserve those sites a couple years ago and keep them so they have access to the river and they stay in their air conditioned cabins somewhere else. So yeah, they probably have no idea I was absolutely miserable. And I can handle some rough stuff. I'm no snow flake. The circumstances just weren't explained thoroughly enough. Won't be returning with them again.
If I went back it would be in the spring or fall. I didn't realize it got so humid. I was prepared for hot, but not humid. Michigan is like that and I hate it when it is. It's hard to do anything, much less feel like doing anything. I did drive around a little to get away from the group we were with and was very entertained with the hills and the scenery. If I had brought the VW like I had hoped to, I bet it would have went a lot better. They probably wouldn't have seen much of me either. _________________ Brian H.

Dang, sorry I asked. Sounds like you were miserable. I work outside and the heat/humidity just plain kicks my a$$. Throw in some ticks, skeeters, and chiggers for a real good time. My personal hunting seasons don't start until after a hard freeze/heavy frost.
I don't get the kratom thing. It's not like MO and MI doesn't have a pot shop on every corner. MO is currently trying to outlaw the kratom.
Going to be near your neck of the woods next spring. Youngest daughter just closed on a house in New Bloomfield Township near Pontiac. Going to go north across Mackinac into the up and across to the head waters of the Mississippi.
Leaving for CO in a couple of weeks. Hope to use the furnace more than the ac. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

Yeah sorry I didn't have better things to say. I really don't like dwelling on negatives, but I'm glad you asked about it because it felt good to get it off my chest.
The U.P. is great. Of course, it was a lot better before tourism there became a thing. One of the last places where you could actually get away from people, but not so much any more. I like to get up there at least every other year. I go mainly for rock hunting. When I'm really daring I'll make it up to Copper Harbor. It gets cold early up there so it's more of an August thing.
Beginning of September I'll be in Leelanau which is north west of Traverse City in the L.P.. Leelanau is my favorite place to get away. Lots of little sleepy towns to window shop if you want, or you can have the opposite goal and get away from people. I like to go up to the state park. The Grand Traverse Bay Lighthouse is there and in the fall when the kids go back to school the campground is empty and it's nice. It at least 30 miles out on a peninsula in the lake and it can get so dark its almost creepy. I can camp within a stones throw of Lake Michigan and listen to the waves hitting the shore all night long.
It can be fun driving a VW around up there.
I decided to divvy up the rest of my vacation time for the rest of the year after reporting on my sad trip yesterday which improved my mood. Maybe the summer can still be saved. Next week I took off so that I can commit to welding on my Tacoma frame and maybe get it in epoxy primer before the temps drop. Of course today the humidity spiked again and it looks humid all next week as well. Murphy's law always applies. _________________ Brian H.

That's why I go solo Sasquatch style. I've waited and helped people with their problems a few times never again. Alone you can cover 5 times the mileage with zero drama. I love my wife but she stays at home on my off road trips. We have our KOA camping trips together ride bikes hike and hit up a casino it works best that way we have our time and I have My time. When I'm in the desert she and her friend do antique shops, Botanical Garden's and eat at organic cafes. |
