Hello all,
I'm looking at a transporter rear end all assembled. To make it easier to move around, how do I remove the axles and tubes from the transaxle? Is this something that can be done quickly, like when I drive to pick it up? Having three pieces would be MUCH easier for me to handle. The front end without brakes and wheels, is still light enough for me to manhandle in/out of my truck for pick up and loading back into my shed.
I've "kind of been looking" for this setup again for a down the road project. Lord knows at 75 I'm somewhat limited on my future projects, and I have too many already.
I built this back in '70 and have always wanted to recreate this for just for the dunes.
Thanks in advance!!!

Depending on how much is included, you may have a lot to remove, like bearing caps, backing plates, and brake hardware. At the trans side, after removing the axle tubes, you need to remove the fulcrum plates that keep the axle in. These and the axle spade end, should be kept together and marked to go back the same, as they wear to each other. When you put it back together, you will need to use gaskets to "shim" axle tubes, for proper clearance. At least, this is what I remember. I would try to keep it together, it might need nothing more than cleaning, and new oil. You probably need a good manual. |

Hey Dan, maybe a better idea would be to build a cart you slide under the assemblty and run it up into your trailer? Wouldn't have to be fancy, just enough to get it off the ground and roll up some ramps. Use some long bars or better yet a small jack to get the cart underneath it?
Hope it goes well. If you start this build I will be expecting detailed build reports since I want one in the worst way, but there's no way I need another thing to build right now. I'll be building vicariously through you. lol _________________ Brian H.

I have a 1-ton pickup and probably not take my enclosed trailer just for these parts. But, it can sit in the box of the truck for any length of time until I get around to disassemble it.
I understand the need to keep parts as they came apart to get the FIT correct upon reassembly. The guy is going to let me know if the rear drums turn or not. It's been stored inside for years and helpfully it all rotates.
It would be SO COOL to have it cloned and driven again! Obviously it would take FAR less work to build than my new 4-seater sand rail... It was going to be a 3-month rebuild, but now it's been a complete tear down and I've replaced 130' of 1.5" tubing and just over 2-years and still not finished.
Thanks guys!
