I am thinking of mounting a BlueSea or similar fuse box under the dash somewhere to hold fuses for a power cable run from my aux. (house) battery for stereo, 12 V DC socket(s), and cabin illumination, etc.
I've been searching all the aux. battery threads but have not found any thing yet.
Any pics of what you put & where? Thx _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

There's gobs of room under the dash on the passenger side behind the glove box.
I didn't install my aux fuse panel there, but did put an amp, crossovers, and a few other things up under there:
Make sure the glove box clears when it's closed. _________________ -James

I'm trying to put a Blue Sea fuse box there, but I'm not sure what I can screw it to.
If I use the sheet metal farthest forward, won't the screws stick out into the outside of the vehicle, inviting rust, and wind/rain penetration? _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Thanks but my underseat areas are already taken.
I'm looking for ways to mount the fuse box under the dash but w/o penetrating the outer body shell _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

What a great idea, chimivee! How did you attach your amp? Did you need to fabricate anything to create a frame or box to secure the amp before attaching? I have looked into using the same space behind the glove box, but have not settled on a good attachment solution. _________________ 1985 EJ20 Westfalia ("Greta") living in TX with a Canadian accent, eh

I placed mine behind the glovebox at the far right corner. Held in place with 3M double-sided adhesive pads available from Amazon. No screws needed. 8 ga power supply wire runs from positive battery terminal under carpet on passenger side to fuse block. _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. Did you fuse the main feed wire at the battery? If, what’s a good fuse size there. I think for myself, it need not be very big (20amp) as I’d only be feeding fairly small amperage from the Aux box. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

I did not use an inline fuse for the feed from the battery. Of course, all circuits originating from the fuse block have their own fuse. _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I am not quite all there myself.” — Cheshire Cat, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland

I added a bussbar under the heater vent cover. There should be space for a fuse box there.

Same for me at the moment. Right now Aux battery in jump seat behind driver, fuse box under passenger seat. I’m thinking my only risk is a short between such from a rodent eating some insulation or chafing, the later I have pretty much taken care of that minimizing that possibility. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

The problem with locating an aux fuse box under the seat is that you will also have to run wiring for any added accessory to that location as well. Much easier to run wiring behind the glovebox and dash. _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. I have a Weekender, so my power plug is aside the passenger seat pedal for the DC fridge, along w/ 2 USB’s. That’s my only use of the Aux power so far.
I should map out a plan and see - I think under the drivers seat for me, or on a panel I have behind the drivers seat with the DC-DC charger and MPPT controller might be the best location.
I don’t foresee running any power to the dash, but perhaps there could be. Seem to recall there is one fuse there going to the cabin light or lights that could be taken over.
No interest in running the radio, I stream through the phone to Bluetooth speaker. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Well that does make it easy to access 12v power from the aux battery for your fuse box. If your only intended accessory uses are to the rear, then locating it under the passenger seat makes sense. Just remember form should follow function. _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I am not quite all there myself.” — Cheshire Cat, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland

An embarrassing shot as it was before the wiring was cleaned up and the plastic put back on. The top 3 are a 30 circuit designation and the bottom 5 a 15 circuit. The 15s, like all my key on circuits, go through a relay so the ignition switch sees only coil draws.
The steering column plastic and the heat duct cover come very close to the panel, so it looks like it belongs there and the wires are shorter than any other location I could think of.
I'll try to post a clean picture of what it looks like now.

Long overdue update on my own subwoofer install under the dash, based on chimivee and others' input.
Did not know there is a thin metal plate running under the soft dash pad, which proved helpful.
Mounted a Kenwood KSC-SW11 subwoofer in late 2022 after reading these posts. Install went well, and have been entertaining the wife and kids with my collection of 80s music on a regular basis ever since. Van Halen's "1984" instrumental is otherworldly, thanks to adding a sub.
Tools and parts needed:
-- 3M double-sided tape cut into small (1-inch or so) sections
-- 12-inch drill bit extender
-- Impact driver or drill
-- Self-tapping sheet metal hex screws (3/8-inch length or thereabouts)
-- Zip ties
-- Grease pen or marker
-- Chilled beverage and/or swear jar of your choice
Anyway, here are several tips and pics from the install:
-- Remove the round hose running from the upper portion of the front heater box to the passenger defrost vent. You'll be able to reattach the hose after you have finished your install, though suggest you dry fit (see below) to make certain you are okay on placement
-- Remove the spring-held defrost vent on the passenger side of the dash. Entirely optional, but I found helpful
-- Using a grease pen or marker while on your back under the dash, hold your subwoofer to the underside metal plate. Find a good spot with enough room and mark it on the metal plate
-- Attach the power and other wires to the subwoofer before attempting to mount under the dash. You'll notice that my install appears "backwards." This was on purpose, so the wires would be closest to the car stereo and aux fuse box, and allow me to close the glove box without any interference
-- Place pre-cut 3M double-sided tape to mounting brackets on subwoofer
-- Dry-fit subwoofer. 3M tape is surprisingly forgiving as long as you don't apply too much pressure
-- Press subwoofer into place with 3M tape. Then attach with self-tapping screws
As mentioned, not a single problem since the install in late 2022. No rattles at all, but YMMV based on your music preferences. _________________ 1985 EJ20 Westfalia ("Greta") living in TX with a Canadian accent, eh

Nice set up!
Apologies for never replying to you (but in my defense, the question did come ~9 years later, HAHA!)
But for what it's worth I think I used zip ties and maybe a bit of foam to cushion corners. Has been solid for 10+ years. _________________ -James
