If parts wear evenly, neither.

Generally valve seats wear and the gap closes up.

Or the adjusters wear more and it opens.

Or the valve stem stretches and the gap closes up.

I would find it hard to believe that the stem would stretch more than the adjuster would wear.

I was just thinking, today I adjusted the valves on my 1972, I never noticed it before but on two of the cly's two of the valves were so tight I could not get .006 blade in, so I guess that means the valve clearance decrease's with normal wear. Thanks anyway Confused .

That would only be logical if they all did. So the other 2 cylinders all was normal? And was it just exhaust or intake or one of each? And were the 2 cylinders on the same bank?

Your prob. right, The tight valves were on #2 and #4 cly don't remember which valve, the other valves were slightly loose.
The reason I adjusted the valves was when I was going up a hill I noticed a valve rattle when under a load, after the valve adjustment no more valve rattle.

Thanks for all the advice, I've been around VW bugs since the 60's, love to drive them, but still don't know a whole lot about them mech Smile .

Yeah, you want to keep an eye on any valves that require significant readjustment over short intervals, especially exhaust valves. If one or more of them is consistently tight every time you check & readjust, can sometimes be a sign that the stem is stretching, and may be getting ready to break - !!
