Ok on the time machine it's more of wanting to slap the ever living hell out of the person that thought this was a good idea. Now that that's out of the way. How is anybody getting the arm off to remove the bracket to modify it. Seen plenty of ideas on what can be done to the bracket. Problem is I cannot get the arm off the shaft. I've been spraying it with PB Blaster, WD40 penetrator, I've even tapped it with a small hammer to see if It would help loosed it from the splines. Other than taking a torch and cutting the damn arm off which is not what I want to do. Has anyone been able to get a puller up there to get the arm off? I'm thinking this might be next on my list. |

There is a trick I read here but I donโt remember all the details. Something along the lines of taping the shaft in away from the arm vs pulling the arm off the shaft. Might be worth searching the forum for the details. Maybe pull it away, slip something behind the lever then tap inwards. It might have required removing the small bolt that holds the outer bushing. Worth trying to find the details. |

there's a small circlip on the end of the shaft, might be rusted to nothing, but it needs to be removed as well as the locking bolt going into the bushing.
i didn't recall the arm had to come off to get the bracket off but my trans was on the bench during the arm removal gyrations so i can't say. battery cable pullers have very thin ears meant to get underneath an installed cable clamp, they might work. since there's always a bit of slop back and forth in the shaft, securely wedge the arm outward as far as it will go and using a BRASS hammer so as to not mushroom the end of the shaft, tap the shaft inward. rinse with penetrant and repeat. _________________ -dan

They used to whip them, even throw them to the lions in a colosseum . But that is frowned on.
I have removed and reinstalled mine with little trouble,
See instructions...

I believe the clutch release lever is fighting him. I imagine the circlip is off, but the lever is rusted to the cross shaft splines. |

You have that correct Mark. Circlip is off and as far as I can tell the bolt on the bellhousing just keeps the shaft in place. Been slowly modifying a puller . Hoping to get the claw's just thin enough to grab the backside of the arm.
I'm going to try the wedging of one of my prybars under it and then tap the end of the shaft as mentioned. That actually sounds like it might loosen it up enough to finally get it off. Will update with my progress or lack of. |

just to give an idea of small 2 jaw pullers that are out there. sometimes tightening the puller and then tapping on the end of the tension screw can get slight movement, and all movement is good!
a plethora of pullers...

You can only do it by moving the clip in the bellhousing so it can slide inwards. Works great when stuck, but a lot of work. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

a two jaw puller is the way to go.
l have one that's be ground down to fit, it's too far away and dark to go take a picture of now, if l remember, l will go tomorrow.
buy a cheap 2 jaw puller, modify it to make it work.
drill dimple into the end of the cross shaft, important step some folk miss.
triumphantly throw it in your drawer of tools you'll only need once ever. _________________ markswagen {mobile mechanic} san diego area all early VW's cared for.
