Surprisingly its during forward flight when a helicopter's engine is working the least and cylinder head temperatures are the lowest, during a winter flight it can become necessary to descend into a hover in order for the ch temperatures to rise in to the green arc. most of my experience is with the HIO-360D1A Lycoming engine which is a 360 cubic inch horizontally apposed 4 cylinder engine rated at 190hp. If an air cooled 4 cylinder engine the size of a big block V8 can keep cool at altitude a smaller vw engine should be able to do the same with a custom cooling shroud and external oil filters. The Lycoming engine is used for a 1200 pound helicopter with a maximum gross weight of 1800 pounds, so a vw powered one would need to be a single seater weighing no more than 1200 pounds. |

It shouldn't be hard at all, it will be registered as an "amateur-built" aircraft in the "Experimental" category, like other kit and home-builts. _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom)

Is it done? That’s rad if it is. I wouldn’t say, “ruined”. Plus it’s a fried egg so… meh? |

Not quite. That post said he'd just pulled it outside and it barely fitted under the hangar door.
There was another update overnight showing the rotor head going on though...
This is his Facebook page...

In a post on the Ruined VWs page, he said it's just art.
