I have been told HAPI went out of business because they went with bigger displacement without going to a bigger crank, and as a result, some cranks broke

Is this true?

If it is true, I have to split the case and find out which crank I have, right ? (this engine is supposedly pickled NOS, never run, and has no documentation with it)

If this is true, what crank do I need ?

Will the bigger crank have bigger main bearings, longer stroke, or both ? What was the crank failure mode and what's the fix ?

Also, supposedly they used aluminum flywheels which also broke, so I just need a stock steel flywheel, right ?

I am not a VW guy but i want to keep this engine and run it, because other than the crank issue, this engine and HAPI as a company have a great reputation

Should this thread be in a different forum ? 'Off road" seemed the closest match

I have no idea what issues the HAPI engines had. What are you going to use the engine for and what will it be installed in? There are way too many unknowns here.

By the way, in a type 1 VW engine it is not possible to get 2.2 L displacement with a stock VW crankshaft. It's got somebody's stroker crank in there...

This would be better asked in the Performance forum. Those guys would know about such things.
