57bug. New to me today
PO installed 1641DP 12v and
Freeway flyer May’21
Used original (57?) axle tubes (assume axles) per receipt
Whines all gears off power-coasting
Looking for advice.
Do 57 axles match up to later trans?
Trans issue?
TIA!

I assume it's a later tunnel style transmission, and not the earlier split case trans..
whines in all gears huh?
Does it whine in neutral coasting?
My first and second guess would be something is wrong with the ring and pinion

What happens when coasting in neutral, clutch not engaged?

Is one side louder than the other? During turns?

Check your rear brake drums and 36 mm nuts first. It´s quite possible, the drive shaft turns "free" inside one drum. (had that several times, when teething inside drums has wear, or nuts were not tighten properly)
With luck, it´s only one brake drum to replace, but the splines of drive shaft may also be damaged. Is there oil around the 36 mm nut? Are the nuts loose?
If a drum sits loose on drive shaft, you allways will get problems, even with 36 mm nuts torqued very properly! (overtorqued)

If not, think about a clutch issue.

Check the gear oil obviously, but beyond that sounds like worn differential or incorrect backlash on ring/ pinion.

In 4th at regular speed going down the road if you let off the gas does it whine like that? If it does it’s worn ring gear.

You may be right.
But as long as we don´t know what kind of trans, split case or tunnel case is installed, imo it´s easier to remove just the wheel caps first, before inspecting the oil or the trans itself.
The main question in this stage is, is the issue inside or outside of the trans.
More input or response would be interesting.

Sorry for the delay in responding to all the responses.
Finally had good weather to drive again

Whines in all gears and in neutral
Louder coasting than under load

No change turning side to side

Tunnel trans

Very slight leak at axle tubes to tunnel connection left side

1 drop on left side outer

4 wheel Wilwood discs installed when engine and transmission were installed 5/21

Rear axle seals replaced 4/24 prior to being listed for sale. Minimum miles from then until I purchased 5/25. 1 drop may be residual from axles replacement.

Will be watching closely as it’s driven more.

Whines in neutral. Sitting still or moving? Clutch in or out?

If it only happens when moving, it's most likely the ring and pinion.
There are a lot of shops using marginal parts on rebuilds, or maybe some wear was missed. Once when I was at Steedles shop getting advice on how to modify some gear hubs, he pointed out wear on the gears that I didn't know how to identify, and that led to a short course on inspecting gear teeth. What I learned, in short is that clean and shiny is not always good to use.

Only when moving
Much louder coasting in or out of gear than while accelerating

Sounds like the carrier bearings. Time to rebuild it!

I HIGHLY recommend Scott Sebastian at MCM. The shop is located in Sanger, California. He allows me to visit the shop and build along side him. When I helped rebuild the 54’s trans with his expertise in January this year. It’s is in my build thread. It is page 95, I think.

His info is, Metal Craft Motorsports, 559-313-3301.

Good luck and tell Scott "Jim says hi!"

Scott X's 2. The man really knows his stuff. If you're on the east coast, then Matt Steedle, PM for contact if needed..
