| I was driving my 54 beetle today and started to smell smoke. Long story short, the battery started on fire. Trying to figure out what the root cause was. There is a previous thread about a possible short to the positive connection but I have the original metallic cover w/ foam/rubber insulation. No sign of a short. The battery has a hole in it on the back edge center about 3 inches from the neg. terminal. The NAPA battery is 7 years old, could it just have failed? Or do I have a short somewhere and if so how do I find it? Any advise would be helpful |

i had an overheating battery years ago, and it was due to a faulty regulator... charging with excessive voltage
i doubt a lead batt could take fire, but heats and gets over pressure which can cause acid gassing, leaks, and potential breaking
since then i use electronic regulators
