If the weld job is crappy (which one could hope, given the “hack” sounding nature of that “repair”), you might be able to take a cold chisel and hammer to the weld bead(s) to break it free — ?? Just an idea — something to think about…
Or a cordless angle grinder with a steel cut off wheel on it! Then the chisel and hammer! Will take less than 15 minutes, tops!
Good shout on both of those ideas. The welding repairs look fairly substantial so not sure I'd get it apart with a chisel though. I don't have an angle grinder but it would be handy to have one so will have a look at costs of those.
Then again, I am heading to my parents place next weekend, was planning to drive my daily car there but perhaps this is a perfect excuse to take the Beetle on a 200 mile jolly! So much easier to work there with driveway, power supply, and not having to move out the way of passing cars (not ideal when angle grinding!)
Thanks all for input, I'll let you know how it goes. |
