IT RUNS!
Shake down runs today. Idle is around 1,000 rpm and really not bad. Tractability of the motor for regular street driving is excellent. It's just a little bit lopy at 1,500 rpm or lower, in gear, but above 1,800 rpm it smooths out and pulls nicely.
No full-throttle runs and nothing over 5,000 rpm today. Just wanted to see overall driveability. Running 60 mph on highway is really nice, effortless running around 2,800-2,900 rpm.
No flat spots, torque seems to be plenty most everywhere other than below 2,000 rpm, but still able to drive off from idle speed. Motor is real responsive, not doggy at all.
So far so good, will start some longer distances and I really need an alignment, the car tracks nicely but the steering wheel is off to the right.
Super psyched, has not driven in 3 years and finally it's alive! |

Last update until the Fall. Motor has a bit over 100 miles on it now. Like everywhere else it's hot here. Temps are low to upper 90F daily now.
Motor is fantastic. If you didn't know better you'd think the motor is fuel injected. No flat spots, no hesitation and it will pull pretty much any gear at any rpm (within reason), but for around town it's just excellent.
It's not peaky at all, just pulls and pulls. Anything at 2,500 or above you can pop the throttle wide open and it just pulls.
The just off idle torque when pulling away from a stop sign or light is a bit soft but that's really the only criticism.
Oil pressure at 2,900 rpm, which is 60 mph in top gear is between 35 and 40 psi, currently running 5W-30 break-in oil. Oil temps running mid 220sF (outside temp 90+).
Overall, the best combo, I've ever had in any of my VW cars and I've had a few motors. |

Sounds really nice. I too have gotten my car back on the road after a few years of inactivity. So nice to be able to drive it. Enjoy! |
