I have a 74 super bug. Had a guy put in a new brake master cylinder but could get the blue hose to fit over the nipples on the m/c. he destroyed the m/c. so now i have to install a new m/c along with the blue hoses to the brake fluid reservoir and the metal lines.
here is the question: what is the easiest way to get the blue hose slid onto the reservoir metal lines and the master cylinder?
can i use dielectric grease to slide the blue hose on nipples and metal lines and then clamp the hose?
any suggestions??
thanks for the help! |

Hi, I used brake cleaner spray. Careful with grease, it might affect the rubber parts of the hose. The blue hoses have no pressure on them and are not clamped (picture second row, on the right):

I’ve always just liberally wetted the inside of those hoses and outside of mating metal lines or nipples w/ soapy water (or even saliva) to lubricate, prior to fitting/pressing them together. Then lightly blow out w/ compressed air or otherwise let dry, prior to putting into service. _________________ 1971 Standard Beetle — fairly stock / driver

Did he destroy the master cylinder or just the blue hose connectors? These just pull out and can be replaced if the latter - example:

1. I would've put the hose over the plastic barbs first, easier access. The other ends can be connected afterwards.
2. I would warm up the blue hose a little (of course, I'm in Arizona, so already warm).
3. I always use brake fluid to lubricate the plastic barbs and the inside of the blue hoses and carefully push/twist to get the hose on. Yes, the plastic elbows can bend, better to find out before installation of the mater cylinder ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
