I grew up in a small city of 30,000 people. In the spring after the snow and ice melted and the streets were dry you could see and taste the salt and sand dust on the busy streets. Even after the street sweepers cleaned up the streets every time a wind or twister went through you got sand blasted just standing there.
Anyone that thinks they can get away without air cleaners in the city is seriously delusional! Not one auto manufacturer has EVER taken that route and I can guarantee not one of them would warrantee your new car if you removed the air cleaner. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

That's right I always take note of what the car manufacturers are doing
They have millions in R+D and have to warranty the cars for quite a long time. |

European style centre mount air cleaner from BAS etc with built-in runners or alfa romeo drla factory 90 degree alloy carb castings to some cotton gauze or foam filters or centre air box as alfa.
No ram pipes needed for them. |

booties are ok for trailering. They keep the big pieces out and don't cause condensation underneath. I would not use them if I was trying to make any kind of HP, especially on an engine I had invested a considerable amount of money in. Something used in racing gets constantly torn down and rebuilt. Something on the street is a must to have an air filter, even if you have to build a custom one. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Yes, I use the Outerwears I bought just to avoid anything falling in the carb throats when I do maintenance work on the engine. I did a one to one test with and without booties and you can clearly see that it messes up the AFR as they don't breathe enough.
I am now using Gene Berg's stacks with the matching small air cleaners. Fits under the hood and give a relatively good filtration. In addition they are very easy to take off for carb adjustements.
