Looks like theres a small plastic retaining tang under it.. but I plan to try.
I see a white/black wire on wire plug thats not on the schematic.
Wonder what that is ..
Speaking of .. i know 30 is hot, 15 is switched, and 50is start… what’s this ‘X’ near the black/yellow? I suppose it's just to match the mark on the plug.

15 is switched, hot when IGNITION ON and also hot in START position.
X is also switched, but only hot when IGNITION ON, but cold, when on start position. (driving light + turn signals + wipers)
Suggest to copy a spare book and a VW bentley book, or something like that.
The change of old steering wheel was to VIN 214 2 164 059, and the new, up to 79 was 214 2 164 060 onwards.
So if your VIN beginns with 2x5, it´s easy going here all along.

The ignition switch is most probably that one and can even be sent to desert Gobi in Mongolia and most probably to Mid West USA too.

You must have something mixed up. The hole to drill is only necessarry if you want to change the mechanical part of the steering lock cylinder including the key. Stay relaxed, there is no need to touch this.

That powers not essential accessories like the buzzer in the door in the cabinet. I just wondered if the X itself had a formal designation like 40 and 15 and 30.
My switch plug has a white with a black stripe on it that does not appear in this diagram. If anyone is familiar with the white wire with a black stripe at the ignition plug, please let me know.
I was able to get the plug loose, and use a jumper to test my 15 and it’s fine .. all the dash lights lit up..! so my alternator is good bottom line, and I’m happy about that. Thanks for all the help. |

Congrats, that sounds good.
(probably terminal "40" was a typo) 30 brings anytime voltage from battery to i-switch, 15 is switched and goes to fuse box and coil, 50 is also switched and goes to starter solenoid)
X, we talked about already
The white-black wire: do you have an parking light, to be switched on or off with turn signal lever? (only as optional extra, at least in poor old germany)
If so, it only hot, when ignition is off. Test lamp (when the big black plug is connected to i-switch) |

Later buses had a key in sensor, which used a Gray/BLK wire |

I just went through an ignition switch replacement. I'd recommend the good one from BusDepot for those in the US:

You can probably find an even better part in Germany.
I got two so that I'd have a spare, as well as a new terminal block. A few years back I went through three dead or dying ignition switches on different buses. They all failed the same way: broken plastic housing. _________________ John

I plugged the new switch in, eliminated my hot wire to the coil, removed my reostat manual fuel mix dial and plugged in the TS2 (which was installed but out of the loop for testing) .. She started and ran fine.
it's almost normal now!
If the Fuel sending unit wasn't crap.. I'd probably take a longer ride. But the float keeps filling up.
any advice on manually checking the fuel level.. like with a thin dowel or something? |
