There is a fellow/company in Europe that makes exactly that with a center mounted air cleaner in Fiberglas. Really nice system but it was priced around $2500 if I recall correctly. Then there is shopping across the pond…

Yeah. I'm seeing radiator hoses clamped to velocity stacks running to a tractor air filter before I spend 2500$ on an air filter!! Or 1000$!!

For guys that dont drive in the dirt or sand, I always though K/N were the best at filtering. They are supposed to filter between 25 and 100 microns
( .00098" to .0039" )
I have a set of Outwears and looking at them with a graduated Eye Loupe, the square holes are between .005 and .010"
A sand particle is roughly .003" |

Maybe it depends...
It's a different application and not a K&N (but same concept in a reusable gauze filter), on my Golf, I've had one since pretty much the beginning. 165,000 miles later and still runs like new. Oil consumption is literally zero. This style of filter isn't my preference, but I did want the cold air intake, and this is the type of filter that goes with it. My experience tells me it's perfectly adequate, but I don't think I'd do it again. I'm at a place now where I like to keep daily drivers as close to stock as possible.
I wouldn't run this style of filter on my air-cooled engines, and certainly not on anything intended for offroad. So, like I said at the start, maybe it depends. |

I just bought a Jetta with the same air filter and quite frankly I am a bit scared that there is damage already done!

Why aren't you guys using R2C air filters?
Did they go out of business? Sold out?
Not a perfect solution but, an easy one.
Even if you have to replace the filters often it's easier than replacing the engine. |

Good.
I bought a few sets years ago, they self destructed and fell apart by now, but they filtered very well.
My service life expectations are far, far beyond what most hobbits here require, so, small gripe. |

To be quite frank I thought they were history. Good to see they are an option again.

It probably depends on the product they installed and if the PO maintained it properly. If it's some off brand or was never properly cleaned and reoiled, then it could be a problem. I've seen the cheap ones that can be purchased from the local auto parts stores, and you can see actual air gaps in the cotton gauze. The one I have has very dense cotton gauze for the filter material.
Mine is from APR and has a carbon fiber cold air intake. It's very nice quality top to bottom and I've always maintained the filter exactly as per manufacturer instructions.
I can only speak for myself, with 165,000 miles on the clock, it still runs like new. I plan to hit 300,000 miles plus, without giving it a 2nd thought. BTW, all these miles were in a desert environment as well.
I won't do it again, I'm more concerned these days with keeping things simple, and nothing is simpler than the stock air filter. |

The air filter brand is S&B. I have no idea as to quality.

Hi, I used a k+n cone pre filter before a normal air filter.
After 3,000m the paper filter LOOKS clean.
Cannot say that it is without a lab or microscope.
Keyword is cone style =all sealed no leaks around element.
The original kadrons had paper elements (nla).
Ps on the van I wanted to put taller elements in, anybody found paper elements for oval style housing on drla Please?
Seems like k+n only want to sell assemblies not elements.
Are the cb air filters ok for street use, or is there something newer and better??? |

If you are talking about the air filters (window screens) that came with my CB linkage and air filter housing kit... no all they stop is 10mm sockets, large sticks, rocks, furry woodland critters and low flying birds!

OK, thanks.
Was hoping the aluminum cased filters were better/filstar ? elements.
I found oval paper filters for mid eighties volvo 240/360 (becoming obsolete).
Hyundai 2.5 h100 diesel.
Some weird one with metal top for mitsubishi shogun.
Both too tall and probably need to make own housing.
Some thing about 80mm tall is needed.
Maybe a round element could be squeezed in.
Without access to a store of filters I'm unlikely to find a fit for K&N housing. |
