Does anyone even have a working AC for one of these cars? It seems to be the one thing that all of us are looking for and I have been looking for years myself to no avail. I have seen no pictures of any complete systems and there are very very few pieces available.
I mean do they even exist anymore? Thats the last piece I need for my Wagon before its "finished" and it seems like a dead mission.

What parts are you needing for the Dasher A/C? All or just some parts? |

A/C condenser, evaporator, compressor, & receiver/drier are available on Rock Auto for a 1992 Fox. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

What about a place like Vintage Air? They may be able to rebuild some of those parts, but if it is missing, they can probably come up with something that, while not original, will function well-probably better than original. |

Just saw this post... did the O.P. ever get his Dasher air-conditioned? IIRC prior to 1980 Dasher DIESELS were not offered with a true VW "factory A/C".
However, there were at least 2 types of dealer-installed A/C systems that frequently were seen, depending on the area where the car was originally located. Controls for those were usually nicely integrated into the 'console' under the dash, and they actually worked fairly well. My '79 sedan had such a system.
As with most small-engined cars, the massive 48HP / 1.5L n.a diesel was really working hard to accommodate the added power drain of a York A/C compressor system. Additionally, the engine's cooling system had to be in absolutely perfect shape to handle the extra thermal load of an A/C condenser pre-warming the air flow to the radiator! But, it IS do-able!
For the time, the Dashers, and especially the wagons, could be very usable vehicles, for daily commuting as well as economical road trips. Yes, some of us still use them! Hard to ignore 43mpg around town & nearly 60mpg on the highway! _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

My old diesel Dasher Wagon had the AC setup, which I toyed with trying to fix up, but ended up ripping everything out to get it out of the way. I do recall there was a smaller, more efficient compressor that some of the MK1 people were using on those engines, but I can't remember details at this point. I may still have all the parts I removed out in the barn if anyone is still seriously looking let me know I can check.
Current diesel Rabbit also has non-functioning AC, but it appears to all be there. Now that I am older and more comfort oriented I may look into restoring it at some point, but sadly not this summer at least. _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!
