My daughter's carb is an EMPI 34 PICT 3 which performs well. I notice that the fuel inlet is a screw-in affair. However, the id of the barb appears to be about 6mm, which makes it difficult to attach the standard 5mm id fuel hose. I can attach it, but will the larger barb id create a wear problem over time?
I am assuming that this is standard part from EMPI. Can it be replaced by a 5mm barb? I am not at the car, so I don't know what the tapped threads are going into the carb. |

The barb should be larger than the hose inside diameter, you want the hose to have to stretch over the barb. the stock carbs had no barb, but did have a straight pipe that is larger in outside diameter than the inside of the hose. the hose was stretched originally, hose clamps were not needed, but I like to instal them anyways
Besure to do a samba search on how to secure the pressed in pipes on carbs and pumps. the pipes can fall out of the pump or carb body. this happens as the casting of the pump or pump ages, and it loosens up around the pipes. this can result in an engine fire!!!
If you have a stock pump, you need to address this, but it sounds like your carb has a threaded pipe so no problem with that pipe falling out
I nearly lost my VW to an engine fire when one of the pipes fell out, the only reason it did not burn to the ground was quick action with a fire extinguisher
All my pipes on the carb and pump are now safety wired to prevent the pipe from coming out
you stated you have a 6 mm inside diameter barb, what is the outside diameter
but if that was a typo, and you actually have a 6 mm outside diameter barb, well then, that is perfect for a 5 mm inside diameter hose.
so get safety wires on you pump pipes.
have fun, dont burn _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Zerotofifty comes to the rescue again!
You are correct, the outside id of the inlet barb on the carb is 6mm. Because the fuel hose fit was more difficult than that for the pipes on the fuel pump (a restored one from Bill Fowler), I assumed that the barb on the carb was incorrect. I didn't want to chew up the hose to create damage, if that was not necessary.
I did read in the archives about pipes coming loose. I believe that Tim (at Volkbitz) will tap his carb fuel inlets for a price, which makes a lot of sense. Safety wire is on the list; thank you.
I made a post about a week ago about gear oil brands to use for the trans; no responses. Glenn pointed me to the non-issue about GL4 and GL5, which I had read earlier. I was thinking of. using 75-90 for the colder climes. Is Valvoline as good a brand as most that are on the market?
Thanks again for your inputs! |

Remember to "wet" the inside of the fuel hose and the outer surface of the barb with gasoline or alcohol to make it easier to get the fuel line on.
Yes - I'm also a believer and user of safety wires. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Good thought. I have used Vasoline on the port tubes, and maybe some WD-40 on the inside of the hoses. The Vasoline has helped; can't assess the WD-40. Will try some alcohol.
Any thoughts on the proper gear oil to use? |

Stock VW fuel hose ID was 5.5 mm, not 5 mm. Perfect size to fit over a 6 mm OD nipple. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

The stock fuel hose sold by WW that I purchased has an id of 5 mm. |
