Hi Rob,

Thanks!

I'll make a few more tweaks. The green light does go out when I give it some gas, although prior to a complete carb rebuild it didn't, so I suspect a little adjustment will help

Trevor

Sorry to rehash this old thread, all the 30pict-1 experts are here.
I just rebuilt my 66 (with a 1600 kit). I’ve got the 30Pict-1 carb. It seems to idle fine, but my volume control screw makes no change to the RPMS. I’ve set it at about 2.5 turns out.

I haven’t driven it, since I just rebuilt it (waiting on new clutch cable). I did set the dwell and timing.

I’ve got a carb rebuild kit on order. I did disassemble and clean the carb really well recently. Is the volume control damaged somehow? Does it matter, if I'm not having problems with idle?

The volume screw should kill the engine if screwed in too far. I'd get out the air compressor and blow 100 PSI into that passenge with the pilot jet removed. And make sure the pilot jet isn't blocked.

Great. I've got the cut off valve. I'll take that off, and take the pilot jet out and clean it.

Great thread. 30 pict -1 as well. Backed out the volume screw 2.5 turns. Idle adjustment screw is all the way in, and motor only is at 550 rpm.

Dwell is at 48 degrees. Gap set to .016”

40 hp motor. single cab.

What am I missing? Should I take carb out and just clean passages, then reassemble and go through this again?

If I pull on throttle, revs up fine. Then returns to miserable, slow idle.

Besides the low idle speed, does the motor run well otherwise?

What type of distributor do you have? That carb works best with a vacuum-only distributor, which was standard issue on 40HP motors.

What's your ignition timing set to? Static timing should be set at 7.5° BTDC, which is the notch in line with the case split on this 40HP pulley.

Timing is set as above. Distro is vacuum advance, after market, 6v, w short, fat brown distro cap.

Motor starts well, very poor idle. I have a rebuild kit from WW and will rebuild today. SC sat for 6 years, my father drove it, maybe, 100 miles. I should have rebuilt carb to start…

Let me get after that.

So why is the volume/mixture screw only out 2.5 turns if the idle speed is so low? You should let it out some till max idle speed is reached, then adjust idle screw accordingly.

Cleaned and rebuilt the carb. Did not touch the choke nor the accelerator pumpgasket, as I think those does not effect idle. All parts cleaned and blown out w air. Used WW rebuild kit,

Still same challenges. With three turns out on the volume screw, very low lumpy idle - with idle screw adjusted in completely. More turns out on volume control did not being idle up.

If I adjust the accelerator cable, bring more of the rod through and advance the lever, I get a better idle, but I am cheating the respons on the pedal.

I am sure it is something goddamn easy, but I am frustrated.

Open to any and all ideas.

Points adjusted, timed well and dwell at 48.9 degrees.

Problem with cleaning a carb , is that there can still be gunk now loosened up in the passages ready to avalanche loose to block up the passage or jetting.

To skip that problem we have a one gallon can of Berryman's to soak at least over night the carb. Then the next day use carb cleaner and pressurized air to clean it again. Repeat this twice more to make sure.

Another thing to check for is a worn throttle shaft bushing. With he engine idling carefully spray some carb cleaner on the throttle shaft to check for a vacuum leak as this will affect idle quality and is common on these 60 year old carbs.

Will do. Also just noticed my accelerator pedal assembly is all bubble gum and baling wire at the floor. New pedal on order…the joys of a Vw….

I don't know if you mentioned this, but are the valve clearances within spec?
