I ran a stinger on my Buggy for a short while. Wonderful racket but I got tired of the tripping hazard pretty quickly. I hated leaving it in a public place for fear that I would come out and find an old person sprawled out behind it with a broken hip! It was hard enough in my shins trying to work around the car.
Stingers belong on the track where they originated in my opinion. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

I had stinger on my Ghia about 35 years ago, I remember it being loud as f*ck. My mum claimed the dog would always begin sitting at the front door about 2 minutes before I would arrive home from work when I drove it. I ended up painting a stripe around the end of the stinger to make it more visible as the car was super low. |

People do trip over stingers, but it’s such a cool vw only thing.
And dual canons are such a buggy thing, but supposed to hurt performance. _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

It's a fact, they both kill low end torque. _________________ Glenn

It's probably the most popular exhaust for buggies and Bajas. _________________ Glenn

True but it's still ugly!
And it hurts! Just try working around one, setting the timing and tweaking the carb for instance...

Atleast it doesn't block the valve covers. _________________ Glenn

Glen... I adjust my valve cold. Timing and carbs are adjusted hot and running! I challenge you or anyone else to do the job with that exhaust system without at least a pair welder's gloves with that exhaust system! There are hot pipes covering every conceivable access to the carb (center mounted) and distributor! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Some of the exhausts block the valve covers _________________ Glenn

And that is one reason I like some type of split exhaust system on a buggy! If there was a compact 4 into 1 that kept pretty close to the engine and not above the top of the stock 7 inch pulley I likely would have went that route.
Some split exhaust systems can make valve adjustment require a stubby screwdriver, but at least that’s done on a cold engine. _________________

I just did a valve adjustment two days ago on a Buggy with dual cannons and yes it took some wiggling to get the covers off and yes access was hampered. The more I work on the modern modified stuff the more I appreciate how VW set them up in the beginning! Is the extra hassle worth the 3 or 4 HP increase? Not from a maintenance standpoint it ain't! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Yeah, but VW stock exhaust works in part because the tin work keeps you away from it. It hangs back quite a bit. I installed a reproduction early Thing split exhaust. They pushed the mufflers out enough to adjust the valves but it is a little awkward compared to the Bug setup.
My original single port heads make spark plug access easier too. What compromises do you want to make? _________________
