On my 95 the stud is on the floor, next to the water pump.

See earlier in this thread - there's mention that really early vans (1995 but really late 1994?) just have a splice connection rather than an isolated stud: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10373954&highlight=stud#10373954

Im Curious how your dc to dc charger works along with the onboard magnatek charger? I have a the renogy 30amp dc to dc and lifepo4 battery ready to install but how do I avoid potential issues of the magnatek and the new battery both supplying dc power to the accessories when the van is hooked up to shore power/A/C?

Thanks Much.

I don't know of anybody that kept the magnatek after installing the DC-DC. Most installs I've seen just delete it and don't have shore power charging the battery. On mine, the shore power only goes to the 110 outlets now- not connected to battery at all. House batteries charge off solar and alternator only.

I can see a desire for shore power --> 12V system if one is parked for a few days and had access to AC power. I RV-enabled camp site or on the road as someone's house.

Recent upgrade to LiFeP4 200amp/hr. Renogy dc/dc charger does use trigger wire from ignition to old solenoid switch wire. 32 feet from starter battery to battery box @ 40 amps calls for #4 wire. The #8 will get pretty hot under charge. Replaced the old Magnatek shore power converter at the same time.

Hey! Looks like some great work. I am in the process of doing something similar to my '95. The AC/DC converter has gone out. Would you make your parts list and/or scheamit available to the community?

It's more money, but this is the baseline I recommend now:

DCDC:

Monitor:

These two will network together and communicate.

I am looking at the Orion-TR Smart 12/12-30A. I am concerned that the 50A may be too much current draw off the sotck alternator. Any concerns there? As I understand it, the Orion-XS series is for use with 'smart' alterniators. Pheraps that covers the over-draw concern if the alternator and DC/DC are coummincating how much current can be supplied.

The Victron DCDC charger I recommend in the link above is the only model that allows configuration of amperage draw, which is fundamentally important with regard to alternator health. I have mine set to 15 amps.

The TR-Smart model does not allow amperage configuration.

Smart alternator compliance refers to the low voltage condition that smart alternators maintain while driving to reduce electrical and mechanical load.

The Orion XS Smart DCDC charger is a pay-to-play situation, and it's worth it. It's not about smart alternators in this case, but about limiting how much amperage the DCDC will draw to charge a house battery.

I think you should either do what Kourt says (go big) or just go simple, do nothing, and use the existing wiring, as I describe here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10374731#10374731
