|
|
I am installing a 6 rib into my street legal sand rail and I am a little confused with the final drive flanges for the 6 rib. I bought a used/ mock up 6 rib that did not include the final drive flanges. It seems that the only flanges I can find are for 091 to 930 CVs. I am looking to just run stock bus axles since I dont really have a need for the 930 axles/CVs.
Will the stock bus CVs/axles bolt up to the 930 flanges?
Below is my planned rear axle setup unless something else is better advised
- Type 1 trailing arms with stub axles that convert to type 2 CVs
- Stock bus axles and CVs
The final piece would be the final drive flanges. if the 930 flanges will work then ill run those, otherwise I am kind of lost on getting stock 091 final drive flanges.
Thanks for any input and advise! |

You need stock 091 flanges. 930 flanges are larger diameter and different bolt circle.
Also, you will find bus axles are far too long for T1 trailing arms. You will need shorter axles for sure. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Thanks for the reply!
It seems that I've had no luck finding stock 091 flanges. Everything I've seen is for 091 to 930 CVs, so I guess im kind of stuck with going that route.
Good point on the axles. I just started looking into different axle lengths and what is suitable for stock type 1 arms with a 091 trans. |

Look into type 181 (thing) axle shafts. They accept 100mm bus cv joints and are shorter in length. |

You might try contacting shops that rebuild transaxles to find a used set of stock 091 drive flanges. Any one near you rebuilding transaxles?
Rancho Transaxles, Metalcraft, Benco, Wright are some places in California that may have some to sell.
The 091 drive flanges spline diameter is larger then the 002
Weddle Engineering use to sell them, but now show discontinued on their website. _________________ Joseph

Yeah, find some swap meets or guys hording vw parts and find an original set. They shouldn't be expensive but may take some effort to locate. I can't imagine they'd be too hard to find though. You just need to talk to the right people. _________________ Brian H.

I have a guy, I'll send him a text that I'm looking for stock 091 flanges and see if he has anything or knows who might. _________________ Brian H.

Do you need both the flange on the trans and the axle stubs? Or do you have axle stubs already?
It might actually be easier to just go to 930s if you have to get custom length axles anyway. If the parts are more available. It may be a little more expensive but I guess you have to weigh that against the struggle to find the stock parts. If you do go 930 I suggest the Empi Race-prep axles. Mine have worked great, I just rebuild them every season and keep them in fresh grease.
I'm sure you already know this, but I feel it's worth mentioning because I wish someone had stressed it to me when I was mounting my 094 in my woodsbuggy; make sure you get the outputs on the transmission lined up with where the axle stubs will be. Any angle forward or backward and that's valuable suspension travel you will lose. I wish I had paid closer attention to that. _________________ Brian H.

Sorry for the delayed response, I just realized all of the replies!
As for the axle stubs, I am able to order Type 1 axle stubs to type 2 bus CVs since they seem to be readily available from what I have seen.
I am starting to realize that going the 930 CV/flange route might make my life a little simpler in terms of getting parts and/or any custom stuff that might be needed.
The rail that this is going all going in is a street only ride for the family and I to enjoy on nice days. The original Swingaxle was giving me alot of issues, so I decided to go the IRS route and found a good deal on the 6 rib that I'm using. At this point, im trying to not let the " finding parts " delay the build any longer.
@ORANGECRUSHer Im just south of Detroit in the Downriver area! |

My guy hasn't replied to me yet.
I think you may have gone a little overboard buying that 6rib for a rig that's only going on the road. Unless you build a big motor that is. A simple type 1 like I have in my baja might have gotten you a lot farther in a shorter amount of time. All you would have had to do is find the right length axles and some regular stubs and arms. It would have been plenty for your purpose. _________________ Brian H.

I didn't realize you were swapping to IRS either. What are you going to do about pivot pockets? Do you have a jig to weld them in? _________________ Brian H.

Yea, I realize that the 6 rib is a bit over-kill forsure. My plan once my Type 1 engine goes out is to go to a 2.2L ecotec setup. I guess I seen it as a way of setting myself up for the future.
My current engine is also built, somewhere in the 1900-2000cc range from what i was told. I have dual 44mm Webers tuned for around that engine size and it runs really well so I guess I believe it lmao.
I do have the jigs for welding in the pivot pockets. Unfortunately my fabrication skills are a bit mediocre to say the least. I may have cut away a little more metal than necessary to get the pivot pockets in and welded easily. That's my current challenge and I may end up finding somewhere to take care of it for me since im having a rough time lol. |
