For what purpose?
As an all the time thing?
As a way to get the car to cross the road?

loud as all heck on the road at reasonable speeds. Kinda suck on hard surfaces, especially when wet.
That said, they are one of the best tires for soft soil. On the dunes here in Michigan, they are second only to paddle tires. Work pretty darn good for trail riding as well. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

They last a good while if only driven on the road here and there. Too heavy for my likings though. Lots of guys ran them when we rode the river, but I think I did just as well with some used tires I bought off a desert race team. They were like mud grips but soft, no brand on them just say “for racing purposes only”. I also had luck with “groovies” from denman implement. I ran them on lots of dirt roads and river rides as well as loaned them to several new duners _________________ Rides:

Yea I don’t believe any terra tires are made that are the appropriate ply/weight rating for a buggy. guys run just enough air to keep them on the beads but they are rock hard. Fine for hills and stuff, no good for sand.
My brother had a rail with a stockish 1641, he was gifted some ditch witch tires. 31x15.5-15. So we mounted them up and went to the river. A friend with some short and fat dirt track tires that were grooved heavily into a drag slick mud grip looking things ran circles around him. _________________ Rides:

ive wondered how dirt track tires would work. not much tread depth but they are light and can hold up to racing youd think they'd be pretty tough |

There actually a pretty soft compound and dont last long on the street. Hell they dont even last that long on dirt track cars. |

Just FYI i ran some dirt track tires for a little bit, worthless on grass, fun on gravel roads, and great on road because theyre so light. Problem i was worried about is how thing they are and i did end up getting a hole in one driving over creak gravel that washed across a road. Switched them out right after that _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug

Can you still buy these in 2 ply or 4 ply? The last time I looked I couldn't find anything but 8 ply. |

Not directly related, but many decades ago I found out turf saver tires from a lawn tractor will come apart somewhere around 60mph when used on a gocart with a kawasaki 650 twin. _________________ A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Exactly! Even the ATV tires are 8 ply rated. That doesn't mean they are actually 8 ply, it just means they are that stiff.
I have not found a source for terra tires here in Canada. In fact for some reason I have never seen a set on a Buggy here. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

New tires arrived and are on the rail.
I am not happy with the front tires. I lost a good 2" of clearance up front. I picked a fine herring bone looking all season tread hoping they wouldn't throw rocks. They don't but you should see the fine dust they kick up. It's like having two of your very own personal tornados in front of you! I did not expect that! I am going to have to wear a dust mask to run behind those!
Wow! Those 8 ply rated rears are some kind of stiff even aired down to 8 psi!
I went from 24" tall rears to 30" tall. Previously my freshly rebuilt 1641 SP felt like it had all the power I could ever use for my style of trail riding. I took her out on the highway last evening and... she is a bit sluggish in 4th gear! Oh ya! Big drop in power on tap. The only time I use 4th is to move from one trail riding site to another on the back roads and with the old tires it tended to buzz pretty bad doing that. This is a completely different animal now!
I am really liking the added road clearance on the rear though. Those front tires have to go even if I have to go back to the implement tires for now! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Had a set of BFG T/As on my Tacoma when I got it last year. Kid took off the good Yokohamas and bolted on the T/As because they "looked cool". Then it snowed an inch over wet leaves. That's when I discovered my 4WD wasn't working. The kid swore up and down the 4WD was "perfect".
The truck wouldn't get out of its own ruts on those tires.

Do not, do not, do not run dirt track tires anywhere besides the dirt track.
Ever see a stack of Hoosiers in the tire truck? They fold up like a wad of Kleenex. The tires are super light, the sidewalls are super light and they're only intended to hold air for 50 laps or so.
We swap over to rollers when we load the Modified. Otherwise it may be on flat tires in the trailer by Monday.
They won't let us run "truck" tires on the track. We won't run track tires on the trails.

Ya those are about 5 feet tall. With the calcium fill those two would weigh more than my entire sand rail! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Nice tires ( rear ) Oprn, they look similar to the ones i posted on my buddy’s rail a while back and i think you might have commented on. Assume they are side by side tires?
Far are the dirt track tires they werent that bad, i had them on for a couple years, granted i didnt put many miles on them as i wasnt taking the buggy out near as much, but they held air about as good as any other tire. I ran 25 psi in them and they wore good, and evenly too. Yes they are thin but a rail is half the weight of a dirt track car too. Im not saying your wrong Dusty1 im just saying that from my experience they werent bad. Theres also different brands, styles, and ones for different classes, so maybe that makes a difference too?
If you were meaning the BF Goodrich all terrains then I absolutely agree with you about those, they suck, theyre more like an all season street tire for trucks in my opinion _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug

Yes side by side tires. Seem to handle higher speeds ok. The quad tires I had on before... not so much. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |
