Hi everyone
I have a 84 stock 1.9 vanagon.
Rebuilt engine, cooling system working fine.
Wen i go to work or for a short ride like 15 or 20 min... everything go smooth
but wen I go for a longer trip 1h or 2h wen i get out of the highway the shifting take a bit more ''will''. When I try to put it in revers I can hear a grinding noise.
When it's cold the revers and all the shifting is fine but wen it's hot not so great and the reverse almost impossible to get into great whiteout grinding.
i have seen similar but not exactly the same problem...any idea? _________________ Marco

Try bleeding your clutch first
then please let us know if it helped. _________________

First thing I would do is bleed the clutch hydraulics. If there's any air in the system the first place you'll notice it is shifting into first and reverse. |

For sure the clutch, make sure it is fully diengaging! If it drags, it can grind
Also if not been done for a long while, maybe the gear lube should be replaced, Always remove the fill plug BEFORE draining. Folks have drained their gear lube only to later find the fill plug seized, which means no way to put the lube in, and with no lube, you really shouldnt drive to a shop to get it opened. If seized, aplication of heat with a torch is often needed. Mine is currently seized, I need to pull my torch out and open it, I have not drained it so I can still drive her. _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Hey. Tank you all for your advice.
I'll start by bleeding the clutch following Sodo procedure.
I may replace the stick by my girlfriend since her leg is exactly 25,5 inches!!!
Seriously thank again and I will keep you update on the result.
I'll probably do it on Wednesday.

I would attempt this in a place you can stay for a bit. In my years as a tech, on more than one occasion, I have lost the clutch pedal when attempting to bleed a used system. It’s rare, but has happened. The hydraulics shouldn’t have air in them. If there is, it got in through one of the components. So be warned.
Of course you can let the fluid just run out the bleeder, but i always have a clear bottle and a piece of clear hose that fits snug on the bleeder. This allows you to see what is coming out the valve, air, mud, or fresh fluid when the system is completely flushed and bled. |

I''m curious if the pilot bearing could be going out, getting hot and binding causing the input shaft to keep spinning just enough when the clutch is depressed to cause the courser Rev gear to not sync _________________
