I have a 76 fi manual and recently installed the corresponding throttle kit from Buttys bits. Installation went smooth but when I test drove, the idle was much higher as if pressing on the pedal. I then backed out the spring loaded stopper screw all the way (circled in the photo). I started the motor again and had much better results but the idle still seemed higher than normal. I then backed out the pushrod for the pedal a few rotations, reinstalled and started the motor again but the idle still seemed high. Anyone else have this issue? I searched the forum for similar issues but only found similar problems related to the carb variety. Would y'all recommend to adjust the pushrod out further? Should I readjust the cable to the throttle body? Thanks for reading, please be nice to me.

Just keep your adjustment(s) to the throttle plate outback.....
Never installed that set up but it looks real slick.
The factory set up did or does feature a 'throttle stop screw' built into the pan ceiling right under your right foot, so the factory had the max stop built into the steel pedal & an adjustable minimum.
Throttles tend to get final adjust at the back so you ensure you have wide-open-throttle & that the throttle blade(s) snap shut cleanly & still leave working slack back there. No tension acting on throttle arm at rest or at standing idle.........
I've gone so far as to employ a cut-down stainless bicycle spoke to get some adjustment in a VW engine compartment to get down the road.... YMMV.
Your set up looks like it has an infinite adjustment for the ratio/leverage drawing the cable forward, something else to consider. |

Just installed an FI Butty's linkage in my '78 bus. Took some fiddling.
Had to reverse the arm (like hercdriver recommended) to attach it in the opposite direction (toward shifter) in order to not scrape against the side of the hole, just like BayCreamPuff's did.
Like ivwshane, it worked for me, centering the arm in the hole. Can't see that it should make any difference, but time will tell.
The new setup is smooth all the way through the stroke. Happy I did it.
By the way, when I contacted Butty's about my issue, Simon responded quickly with offers to send other parts, or do whatever it took to get it right. So, good customer support. |
there’s a thread about the linkage here:

Would never find the time to keep up another classic air-cooled. |

Hope you are getting it figured out!
It took some fiddling to get my BB figured out for my setup.
You will be happy when you do.
One thing I did was shorten the rod that attaches to the pedal to lower the angle of the pedal. Made it easier on my foot while driving.
Good luck! _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |
