From an earlier post by Clara: 3) what is the outside temp? is it 50F? 90F? If it is 70F or higher did you put the pre-heat in summer position?
Trying to piece this tip together re summer position from a position of complete ignorance. Based on other threads I think the pre-heat goes from the heater box to the oil bath air cleaner. I have Webber ICT carbs now, so no oil bath. Is this irrelevant for me? Is there anything I can or should do related to my preheat outlet to prevent overheating in Summer? If I had an oil bath, how would I put the pre-heat in Summer position?

mostly the pre-heat comes from under the engine, not from the heater box.
on stock late 67s it comes from the heater box.
To put the pre-heat in summer position, put the not weighted side of the pivot arm under the ledge on the air cleaner, as so:
This keeps the flap open.
Do this when it gets above about 70F during the day.
Summer Position:
In winter the arm should move freely, so at idle it sucks pre-heated air in, and the flap should move when you step on the gas.
Getting pre-heated air means the engine warms up better, and helps eliminate carb icing which is a problem in damp climates, even up to into the 60s.
When it gets below ~70F during the day, I put it in winter position.
Winter Position:
If you have no oil bath and this no pre-heat flap, you probably not having any pre-heat, and you can't turn it on in winter or off in summer. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Running 60-65 with stock 67 running gear should be no problem.
FWIW, the coolest rpms is ~2600-2800. The engine runs hotter below and above that speed. VW says a 67 top speedo is about 65mph IIRC, which is about 3500-4k rpms. ( I did the math at some point) Which means it will runs cooler if you slow down 5 mph.
Umm, correct me please but wasn't there no 0-60 time for type 2's because they hit red line before 60?
If he'd got RGB's and hitting 65 and the motor is not screaming he must have hella huge tires in the back. With an FF setup and running a smaller tire in back I turn 3K at 60 MPH. |

On a 36hp bus the red line is at 48mph.
A bus with a 1500/1600 has a bit more pep.
For a 67 bus if you look at the owners manual it says top/cruising speed is 65mph. I have no problem driving 60-65 with a 1600sp, stock size tires and 1 ton trans gearing. The engine and gearing are well paired, and designed to drive at this speed. and carry 1 ton.

I do tend to install all the tin VW put on there, and also use the doghouse oil cooler, and thermostat set up, like VW designed.
We got 80K miles on this motor that was newly rebuildt in 2011. (It needs a re-rebuild now, but this was when newly done):
