As the title states.
What are you guys using for an onboard jack?
How is it stored and/or mounted?

I need some ideas. I’ve currently got a bottle jack with a couple different toppers I made for different jacking points on the car. Currently stored in an Apache 3800 case bolted to the package shelf.
While I do like bottle jacks, they are heavy.
I like the range of a scissor jack and ease of storage/mounting options. They’re also a lot lighter.
I’ve been eyeballing this new HD scissor jack from AGM.

For those who’ve never seen this before;
I’ve got AGM’s 3.5 ton Jack-Rod. It’s probably my most used tool for multi-vehicle quick tasks when using a floor jack. It turns any floor jack into a safe adjustable jack stand. The locking pull-pin is double shear. Pretty cool tool.

Could be your next birthday present from your wife, kid, yourself, etc. or for another gear-head you know.

Ha! I bought that AGM scissor jack but haven’t mounted it yet. It is nice looking. It is long! I was thinking of mounting it in front of the gas tank where the washer bottle (?) would be.

The gate installers at work get sicissor jacks at the junk yard for 5 bucks. Weld a cradle on the top, flat plate on the bottom for stability, and a nut on the screw that accepts a 3/4" socket.

Dodge minivans had them. Any wreckers will be a source for a bushel basket full. I have 2 here from our days of packing kids around, saved them they were the best part of the minivan!

Ok, just kidding!

After some research I found this;

The cheapest strongest scissor jacks you can buy are surplus military 2-ton (4000lbs) HMMWV (H1 Hummer) scissor jacks. They extend to about 17" in height. Not a lighter weight option at 24lbs.

I found this online store to be the cheapest.
For me including shipping was less than $100 out the door!

https://www.easternsurplus.net/PartDetails/3154/HM-1292-Scissor-Jack-HMMWV

It comes without a handle. You need to clean them up a bit.
I can easily weld on a nut for a wrench.

There are 3.5-ton surplus scissor jacks available online but they are a lot more expensive.

Here is another lighter weight capacity surplus jack. Rated at 1.25-tons.

Joe,

Can you weigh the AGM jack for us?

I'm kinda surprised anybody can make money selling scissor jacks. They're all over the ground when I go to the junk yard. Obviously, they aren't cool looking tho or have nice stickers on them

I really hate you for having time to do all that cool stuff to a jack.

Scissor jacks are a good simple design and compact.
The problem is they're made so damn cheap they should really have an hourly time rating on them.

A company like AGM will have no problem selling a beefed up, high lift scissor jack. They almost immediately sell out when they have them in stock. I looked a week ago and they were sold out.

Nobody wants those factory junk pot-metal scissor jacks for actual repeated vehicle use. That's why they're in bins at yards for $5.

At least the military surplus ones have to pass more strict tests. They're also made in the US.

Well I guess different people have different needs. Honestly, I have never needed a jack, knock on wood, so it hasn't been as present on my mind. It's hard to lose a tire or break an axle when you're buggy is always on jack stands in the garage because you haven't finished the last three upgrades ... that's why I'm such an armchair offroader Rolling Eyes not enough time in the day.

It would be cool if they could make some kind of composite jack that could lift our lighter vehicles and not be as heavy to stow and easy to mount somewhere.

Has anyone made a mount for one of the Farm Jacks like Harbor Freight sells? All of the Jeeps around here have them mounted in front of the windshield on the hood etc.

I happen to have two brand new ones and haven't used either one yet. If you're running, say on the dunes and get stuck, a scissor jack is not really going to help much. But a Farm Jack that lifts at least 24", that can get your tires up in the air to push sand under the tires.

Just curious now that this thread has been posted.

These are what I used for my buggies
It is a modified bumper jack.
The saddle part is a 1/2 piece of 1-3/4 tubing welded where original hook for bumper would be. This one has flat plate welded to bottom, other ones I have uses the stock part that fits on bottom of jack.
They are lighter then a HiLift jack.
They are getting harder to find

Wow jsturtlebuggy! I have not seen one of those bumper jacks since Dad sold the '59 Plymouth! Be aware that with time and use those punched steel notches got rounded on the edge and they tended to slip! I have watched it happen.

Am I the only one smelling a bit of OCD here? 3.5 ton... Military grade... farm Jack All with 24" lift (both mine will lift up to 48" and is capable of raising one corner of a barn!), What are you guys driving or planning to do out there? Wow!

I have been driving both a street Buggy and a sand rail for around 10 years. Not one flat, don't carry a spare, jack or a wheel wrench either. I have not to this point ever needed them... touch wood!

Anyway this thread got me thinking that one of those scissor jacks you trip over at the wreckers are pretty compact and light weight (they are rated for 3 times the weight of either of my cars) along with a wheel wrench might not be a bad thing...

I did buy a scissor jack from Napa for $24 just to work on the beetle in the driveway. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7761002

I ended up buying the AGM one because turning that god damn handle on the napa jack was driving me nuts. I like the size and the large foot print that supposedly works in the sand.

I got the smaller 1.25 ton surplus jack for Bandit. I run solo in rallycross with no support vehicle. Even though I run 45psi tire pressures. The chances of a de-bead are still high. With all the rest of my tools and gear in the car the last thing I need is more weight I have to carry on the drive to and from. Space in the car is also a concern. If I can mount the jack on its own in some random nook vs in a box. That would save space for smaller loose items.

Funny story about a Hi-Lift jack:
A guy in Phoenix had one mounted on the hood of his Jeep. Some Snowbird saw it and called the Cops on him for having a machine gun mounted on his Jeep. The Snowbird was informed by the Cops that:
1...It was not a machine gun, It was a jack.
2...Even if it was a machine gun mounted on his hood, it would have been legal in Arizona.

My jeep friends have gone crazy over this kit: https://brennans-garage.com/products/tauler-jack-kit
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Quote:
Are you looking for an alternative to that old clunky farm jack. How about a budget replacement for one of those expensive hydraulic units? This CNC laser cut 1/4" steel DIY U-weld kit allows you to modify an 8000lb side crank trailer jack into an amazing perimeter style 'bumper' jack in about 2 hours.

Once built, this jack has a 15" stroke from a minimum of height just under 6" to just over 50" using the easy to adjust foot and base. The Tauler Jack can be run all the way up without risking it getting stuck between clicks and its fine adjustable anywhere along its travel. The greaseable screw jack mechanism is inherently safe and will not bypass pressure or fail to engage a pin all the way.

The jack is the red thing above the front wheel. It is horizontally mounted. I cut it about three inches short to fit. You can see the foot part.

I guess it all boils down to "what" your intensions are for its use...

If I want to change tires, I have a floor jack. I highly doubt that anyone out in the woods or dunes are NOT going to be changing tires, but getting UNSTUCK! Have to lift high enough to get stuff under the tires and I highly doubt a convenient small light weight scissor jack is going to cut the mustard in that scenario. But an OVERKILL Farm Jack can do just that, raise the buggy to a dangerous height, just be careful of slipping sideways on the jack.

A similar thing that I many times a day at the dunes is this, they get high centered and then spin until they're buried to the frame. They all get out and start digging by hand under the frame trying to get unstuck... Sad

I'm sure many others sell them, but Harbor Freight sells a folding military type fox hole shovel smaller in size than a paper picnic plate.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The shovel head has serrations on the end and side to help cut away small brush in the woods when stuck. I have one of the OLD style from many years ago, Army Surplus, but the handle does not fold and it's quite a bit larger than the double folding HF shovel. These would be perfect to reach under to pull out sand to get unstuck. How convenient is it to carry a folded shovel, not that easy, but neither is a jack easy to secure to a buggy.

Food for thought.

I have a nicer version of that shovel that might have been made by Gerber? I've had it on my long list to mount to the woodsbuggy for eons now. Every time I pick it up, I look at it and look at my buggy and throw it back in the corner. I can't picture a cool way to mount it. It'd actually be better if it didn't fold down.

I have seen leather pouches shaped like a front pocket on flannel shirt that you can put them into. I just wouldn't want my shovel ever coming loose because the serrated side is very sharp.

Besides in the dunes we go in, I think your arms and hands work just as good on that type of sand to move it as a little baby shovel.

True, I was only thinking tire changing not digging out of sink holes.
