Well…same idea but not exactly the same 911 style. To my knowledge, there’s a couple different styles of Porsche basket weave vinyl…the early 911 and the 914. This is the 914 style which has slightly deeper ‘pockets’. I like this version better. It is from Germany and is great to work with, nice elasticity and lays down really well.

Would that battery work in a stockish bug too? My 73 is due for a new one and I like the look and weight and price of that one compared to a traditional type.

Yes…however…

This model/size AMG (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery does not have the same reserved capacity as a more standard OEM replacement…

I’ve used this battery in several of my past ‘hobby cars’ (not daily’s) and never had any issues. This included a V8 and high compression 4 cylinder cars…driving them both in summer and winter.

That said, all these cars were garaged and had ECM controlled FI engines in top tune…and I always kept a Battery Tender on them when not in use…

Because of the reduced reserve capacity of this particular size battery, I would not use it in a 4-season carbureted AC VW daily driver that is kept outside.

Very Happy But I’ll know it’s there!

Did this today…a little thing that I found oddly satisfying. Kinda like finish work.

I’m going for a very stripped down interior look. Before painting the OEM upholstered areas, I trimmed away the ‘alligator teeth’ that gripped the factory upholstery on the door pillars. I didn’t cut the flange flush as it would have cut thru the spot welds separating the sheet metal. So it left a somewhat sharp flange…

Finished the rear upholstery.

Made my own templates for my custom upholstery. Started with the hardest part…the wheel wells. I’m using Porsche Perlon carpet which, in my mind, is essentially felt with a backside for gluing. Very light weight. Porsche used it in their race cars and frunks of 356’s and early 911’s.

Yeah, all around amazing work. Like watching a show about some super high-end "coach-built" European car! Hey, wait - that's exactly what this is!

Btw, are you using that thermozite on the rest of the interior?

No. I wanted a little more thermal/acoustic insulation on the large panels adjacent the engine/trans…more than the essentially heavy felt Perlon carpet can provide…so I used it there.

Also, I’ve been researching and imagineering my exhaust system. For the aesthetics I have in mind…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

…and the packaging of said system, the exhaust will likely be louder than OEM Wink

I had the Thermozite in stock so I added it hoping it might quiet the cabin down enough to where the Mrs might ride along… Wink But with no AC, no heat, no radio, no ‘Apple Play’ that’s unlikely! Embarassed

I jest…

Well…guess I answered your question too quickly!

Thanks to your reply and question it got me thinking. My original idea was to use the traditional OEM style rubber floor mats to cover the floor and tunnel…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

…front and back. Got to thinking how heavy the rubber mats would be compared to the Thermozite & Perlon carpet (light weight is a top design goal for this build).

Hmmmm…I could make custom floor mats by covering the Thermozite w/Perlon, & cover the tunnel with just the Perlon (tucking it under said mats along the length). It would be much lighter than the rubber mats and with the Thermozite foil side down, it might reduce the radiant heat from the engine coolant lines that run under the pan…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Well, maybe not since the coolant lines run on either side of the tunnel…which by way of its structural mass is probably a bigger heat sink relative to the pans under the seats. Anyway…I think the Thermozite/Perlon would be lighter and more acoustically beneficial vs. rubber mats. Let’s get on with it! Rolling Eyes

So I started by making the rear floor mats. Made patterns…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

…transferred to the Thermozite and cut out L & R sides…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Covered them with the Perlon carpet…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

…complete with cutouts for my custom seat brackets and roll cage…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The mats fit tight and don’t move. I don’t plan on bonding them to the pan as I want them removable. The fronts will be fastened to the pan using industrial velcro in a few locations. For the driver’s side tunnel and floor, I’ll bond some rubber matting to the feet area for abrasion protection.

So thanks again for your reply and question vanram , it got me to come up with a better design solution! Very Happy Thumbs Up

I wish it was just a break. I’m thinking of writing a country song about my life lately. Radiation treatments, then finished that and got a kidney stone I still haven’t passed, my dog had a stroke, my painter had to get a gallbladder removal, so no help at the shop and my helpers daughter was pregnant and lost the baby the other day . All I need is to some way get a truck and train in there and I have the making of a hit country song. lol

So I been a lil bust needless to say .
