Which netting did. You decide on? |
I picked up a small trampoline safety net that I'm going to use. It's not as tough as real racing nets but I'm only trying to stop sticks and cactus, not bumpers and tires. It has very small holes and looks like dark window tint from a dozen feet away.
It's going to be a while though before I start sewing because I have a bunch of other projects to get done first. |

This may require some imagination and fabricating skils, but have you considered making a louvered panel with plexiglass?
If they overlapped but had space between them, you would pretty much repel anything and still retain the airflow. Plus you would be able to see thru it. You might even be able to limit it to just a few louvers at the front edge. Kinda like a bug deflector but for plants. |
heh heh heh. I saw a spaghetti end of the world movie many years ago that had louvered panels over the windows on their battle car. Bullets bounced off. Thanks but I'll stick with my netting. |
I like to over-do everything. When the end of the world comes, we'll see who's laughing. My in-laws in Chicago say they're gonna run up to my place if it ever hits the fan. _________________ Brian H.

Oh well the end of the world changes everything! What I should have said was that I'll stick with the netting for now. In case of TEOTWAWKI, I have ceramic and Kevlar inserts for the windshield and sides. They'll go on with the gun mounts. A twin .30 caliber with drum mags for the front deck and swing mounts for the sides for semi auto shotguns. I used to run it with the twin gun mounted all of the time but the friggin' snow birds kept calling the Cops on me. Then the Cops show up and just want to go race around in the desert and shoot the guns. |

Netting is just to mitigate the chances of a stick poking your eye out. They are by far not perfect. I was considering netting myself for my rail. Missouri brush is different though I am sure. |
The netting keeps stuff like Cholla cactus from flying off the front tire and impaling you or a Joshua Tree slapping you across the face or a Creosote Bush branch from going up your nose but it does more than that. Mine kept a dog from biting me in the arm and kept a Gila Monster from getting a ride in my lap. They are not pretty from six inches away. |
Definitely don't have any cactus where I live. I'd say maybe a critter or two though. Lol _________________ One day, I may learn.
Probably not today though. |

Just so all know: I have been working on this for all this time! Yup, I have been thinking about a problem that I ran into and at my age and the amount of narcotics onboard (all legal), that can be a lot of work!
The problem was how to attach it to my car. The old expired racing nets that I had been using, had mounting points on them. I can sew attachment points on straps with my sewing awl but I don't want to run fifteen feet of seam by hand!!!!
It popped last night. I was looking for something on Ebay and spotted something called "Shade awning clips". They snap onto both sides of a shade awning to create an attachment point and since shade awning material is just about the same thickness as what I have, I think they'll work.
My Rat Rod Trail rail is built on an Invader frame which was set up as a "Two and a Half" passenger car. Two adults in front with two kids sitting sideways in back. I turned the Kiddie Park into a storage area that's mostly accessible from inside so the net will just be attached with zip ties to the frame.
The passenger compartment nets will be fitted with some heavy wire inserts to keep the shape I need. That worked well on the old ones. I think it's going to look pretty nice and function as well. |
