I was looking at a set of the heim adapters that are supposed to be so you can run heims on a vw spindle, tapered on one side to fit the spindle and the other end is for a 5/8" heim. the tapered side is too big to fit any set of spindles that I have so im assuming that their not made to fit stock vw tie rod holes? anyone know what hole / taper they're supposed to fit?

yeh. and as im searching the web for some answers to my own question, which I'll post here in a few, I think its funny how different vendors have different info on these. seems all say they are international 7 degree taper end BUT Moore parts say they are for a 3/4" heim with a high misalignment spacer ( thus making it for a 5/8" ) but obviously they've never tried that because there's no way the top heim part is long enough for a 3/4 high misalignment spacers. its barley long enough for the 5/8" QA1 high misalignment helms I test fit on there that DONT use spacers and I know are shorter than if you used the spacers.
ok, the Appletree says they use 1/2" heims but the picture looks identical to any others.
EXCEPT Pacific customs, they have one that does look different and they give different measurements. and they state theirs does fit a stock vw tired hole and is for a 1/2" heim.

ok, so here's what Kartek says;

Our heim joint adapters also called extension pins allow you to put a nice heavy duty heim joint where a tie rod end used to be. This is great for the strength as well as the angle because a heim can achieve a higher degree of angle than a tie rod end or drag link. This particular adapter fits Wright, EMPI, Latest Rage, Saco, Pro-Am, or Howe rack and pinions that have the International truck taper. It also fits some models of Ford Bronco and Ranger. To confirm the angle and size of your current tie rod end, use the formula for slope (sometimes referred to as "rise over run") where you take the length of the taper "y" and divide it by the top diameter "x1" subtracted from the bottom diameter "x2". See below:

Note: This is the correct pin for EMPI, Foddrill, Latest Rage, Saco, Tweed Designs, Woods, or Wright international tapered buggy spindles. If you have larger truck spindles that have a 5/8" bottom hole, then purchase part number KTKHEP58580.

For use with FK Bearing's HRSMX10T or HRSMXL10T allows up to 19 degrees max angle

Top Length: 1-7/8"
Top Thread: 5/8-18
Top Diameter: 5/8"
Bottom thread: 9/16-18
Bottom Taper: 7.5 Degree
x1 Diameter: 0.720"
x2 Diameter: 0.600"
y Length: 0.900"

and here's Pacific customs ;

If you're tired of your VW tie rod ends breaking on your spindles or pitman arm then this is the solution for you! This handy heim joint adapter has a tapered end for the VW tie rod hole and gives you a straight 1/2 shaft on it allowing you to use a 5/8 heim joint with 1/2 inch misalignment spacers. The misalignment spacers allow you to get heavy angle on your tie rods without the heim joint binding.

1/4 Inch tall misalignments fit perfect.
3/8 Inch tall misalignments will fit, but don't leave enough room for the cotter pin at the top.

If you have a dune buggy or sand rail and you need to check to see what your front end requires use a 17mm and 19mm box end wrench. Put the wrench on each of the four nuts that hold the tie rod to the pitman arm and the tie rod to the spindle. If a 17mm wrench fits onto the nut, they are early model tie rod ends. If a 19mm wrench fits onto the nut, they are late model tie rod ends. It is important that you check all four tie rod ends because some vehicles have two early model and two late model ends.

ok, a little more info...
turns out I was wrong about Moores and the 3/4" heims, Pacific customs has three sets of these, one for the early vw tie rod which I posted earlier and two others that use international taper, one for the R&P ( which is shorter ) and one for the spindle, which is longer to accommodate the high misalignment spacers for use with a 3/4" heim.

I was tempted to give you a ribbing but I know nothing about these myself. If they were one of those parts notorious for not being the dimensions they're advertised to be, I didn't want to be the jerk saying read the damn descriptions. lol I'll be a jerk any other time tho

If I had a dollar for every time I thought I had done my due diligence and then posted up a question only to go back to searching and immediately find the answer I'd have a third buggy.

Still doesn't hurt to shame people for it anyway. This is the way.
