Reviving this old thread.

I am working to create a working alternative for the Formuling France Steering Wheel Horn button but before I get to deep, I would need to know how many people would pay about $100 to $150 for an aluminum powder coated button replacement? It would be a drop-in, turnkey replacement for the rubber button. Plans are to only make two colors, black and natural aluminum. Manufacture Logo not included but would have location for one. Final product would look very much like original. In the picture below.

SOLVED

Here’s my solution!

Yesterday, I bought a ‘55 Oval window that had an assortment of batwing horn buttons hiding in it.

While driving home, it dawned on me that these were roughly the same size as the void in my Formuling steering wheel. Hot damn, it’s perfect!

So this morning I set about making it work & grabbe some scrap from another project.

I trimmed off a section & bent it 90°.

& then introduced it to my stretcher.

After getting it to the correct shape, I trimmed it to size...

Then I fit the horn button to ensure proper fit.

And then welded the end together.

After that, I removed the steering wheel from the adapter.

And used the horn mount as a template.

I then used a 2” hole saw to cut out the center & drilled the holes around the perimeter & fit the sleeve into it.

Initially, I welded the collar flush to the flange, but this sets the collar too deep for the horn button to reach to properly snap into place so I cut the spot welds back off.

After bolting the new flange to the wheel, I laid the wheel on its face so the collar was flush to the face of the wheel & tack welded the collar to the flange.

Then I reassembled the wheel to the flange & adapter & popped the horn button in place.

Best of all, this is a working horn button.

Now, you can have your choice of rocking any choice of factory or aftermarket Oval window horn buttons in your Formuling steering wheels. Let’s see your Formuling wheel with a Petri or Kienzle clock horn button.

Hauling this up since there hasn't been any action for years... I'll make a classified ad if there's interest - anyone still looking for wheel buttons?

I prototyped this over the weekend for my own wheel. It's 3D-printed urethane - I've made a lot of parts with it, super durable. Just flat and plain, but it's going in my dune buggy so doesn't matter to me. Works great, they'd be reasonably cheap...

If anyone can get me a casting (I've hit up Hoobie a few times, no reply), I'll put my own $$ in for the materials etc...

If someone has the capability of casting new ones, I have one that can be used to make the mold. I’d be interested in at least a few new ones.

Time to revive a dead thread.

I bought myself a 3D printer. Figured I’d give it a shot. Found a file online for about $10 where someone had done one up in 3D. Played with it in the Bambu Lab slicer for about an hour. Bought some red TPU filament (putting it in my red Bug) and fired off a test print.

Lot of infill support that has to be removed once it printed, but not bad for a first print. I’m going to order some black and maybe some grey TPU and play around with it. I think I can lessen the visible lines a lot. However, they show in the pic a lot more than they do in person.

Nice. I've been looking for a 3D file. Can you tell me where you purchased the file?

Hey, sorry for the delay. I just saw your post.

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadget/formuling-steering-wheel-center-piece

It’s missing the Formuling logo, otherwise it’s perfect.
