Just acquired a '72 Super rag top. The shift rod has been cut and klooged. I have a new (correct length) rod. The rub; I can't see how to it's installed. Is there an access someplace to get rods in and out? Any hints greatly appreciated. |

i never had a super BUT these rods come out the front . look right below the front hood there is an access plate on standards to be removed first . you loosen the rod from the trans n fish it towards the front till it comes out .
while its out its a good time to replace the shift rod bushing as it needs to be out for that . |

Just as my3 bugs said you gain access through the front removable access panels. Take the shifter out by the 2 bolts. A little to the rear of where it was there is a metal hanger that the shift rod bushing sits in and the rod will go thru that hanger. When you are putting the rod back in when you get the end of the rod to the shifter hole grab it with a pair of channel locks and twist it thru the bushing with ample grease. It will also be a good time to replace the coupler rubber inserts to the transmission. Most people find the rubber replacements work better than the urethane and if you also opt to replace the coupler itself, carefully compare it to the original as some of the replacements are not sized properly. I think samba member Cusser has a photo showing his and will post it if he sees this. Lastly when done at the coupler twist a piece of wire thru the square bolt to prevent it from loosening. Good luck-Bob |

Remove the bash/crash plate (not an official term...just what I've always called that structure), located at the front of the car, behind the front valance. There's a rectangular hole on the front end of the steering head that will become visible once the bash/crash plate is removed. Remove the shifter then use a pair of needle nose pliers to slide the rod forward through the access hole. I always find it easier to slide the rod forward by first flipping the rod over so the cup is facing straight down.
