Never seen this before, new Sachs 180mm pressure plate. Are these for balancing? Kinda cheesy, would you run it?

I've never seen that either but my first thought is how the hell is it that much out of balance?
The balancing I've seen before, usually done with the flywheel, is very minor with some small divots on the edges.
Examples I found in the gallery

Thanks for the reply, definitely odd. I think I’ll return it and see what the next one looks like… |

I've never seen anything like that, looks so "homemade".
Personally, I'd be wary of using that. I'd definitely contact the supplier.
This is the Brazilian Sachs 200mm pressure plate in my 1970, purchased in 2018 through CB Performance.

That is really bad, never seen it done like that ever. The welds look extremely poo, such that I doubt they are good, they might even fail. I doubt it is even factory done. I suspect this is a returned clutch that the prior customer modified then sent back, and now you got it.
Total JUNK, send it back, get one without those junk weld on weights.
I have seen balancing usually with lightening holes drilled around the perimeter, and I kind of recall maybe some neatly attached weights in some instances. But never anything this janky.
Id not want that on my car. return it _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

That looks like it was used for welding practice in a training class. I would not put that in my car. |

Totally agree with all of the comments.
1. That is NOT original
2. Welding so poor
3. The sheer mass that is requited to "apparently" balance the PP shows that something is very wrong with the balance elsewhere.
4. If any one of those weights come off they will damage the bell housing if they come off at speed, not to mention the out of balance vibration that it will impart.
5. My "German" Fichtel(?)and Sachs pressure plate is drilled in on the outside periphery. Adding weights assumes that the repairer does not have the drilling capability to do it the correct way.
6. I wonder what adding that quantity of weights do to the static v dynamic balance? That is, whilst the weights may balance out the out of balance in the X-Y axis, what does it do to the XYZ axis balance. Does the manufacturer know or even care? _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

Personally would be wary of having one of those weights come loose to jam into the transaxle case shredding up magnesium/aluminum dust and sparking against the steel of the flywheel. POOF, flash instant VW BBQ....... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

My first impression is that is a core returned to be remanufactured, and that it somehow slipped pass quality control? But you said it was a NEW part, right?
Good call returning it. _________________ AshMan40

I see it’s stamped Sachs, I would say there are other less obvious shortcomings with that PP
KEP or Kennedy engineered products make pressure plates domestically
you have been wise to ask here _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5

I don’t think I’ll use this one either. To the other questions, RockAuto and it’s a Sach’s clutch kit. |

I have had good luck with the exedy kits in my Honda Civic. They seem to be of good quality for what it's worth. You have had more trouble with this than there should be. |

I have never bought anything from Rock Auto, but with so many legit Aircooled VW suppliers out there, I wouldn't buy anything from them unless nobody else had what I needed.
I see that PP is from Brazil? Was it new or a refurb? Back in the day Brazil was the low cost, roll the dice quality, but that looks really bad. _________________ Chris

Back in the day my mom's '65 engine locked up hard. I assumed it has seized. As I was taking it out I noticed the crank pulley moved as I pulled it free. Turned out one of the retainer springs on one of the pressure plate arms had broken free and wedged the flywheel to the bell housing. I would hate to think what one of those weights would do. _________________ Chris
