Thanks all. The part numbers will hopefully be useful for someone this side of the Atlantic to find that starter.

I can confirm that Hella 8EA 011 611-181 fits. It's also moulded so it will grip a D-bolt.

It's a fair bit longer than a starter for a manual gearbox. For comparison new Hella autostick starter = bottom, old manual Bosch starter (SR15N) in the middle and a cheapo that I had (came bundled with a bellhousing) bottom.

The old one came out easily, but I had to pull the heater pip out to make enough room to get the new one in. That might just be because I was swapping them on the floor without jacking the truck up, so the axle was horizontal.

Got it all in, and the battery cable clamp gave up. Managed to test the starter though and it spins. Ringing round to see if anyone local makes new cables. FML Rolling Eyes

Autostick starters are nice, but the solenoid is the weak link in them. They have a higher failure rate than standard starters, and nobody makes replacements. The solenoid isnt the same as standard ones also. I bought 2 of them, both had solenoid problems, one was a "rebuilt unit"

FWIW this is the one my Thing has, and I dont have reasons to doubt is original to the vehicle. Has never failed in 50 years.

FWIW.

If your running the Autostick starter with a fuel reserve valve you may find the clearance of the reserve arm to the solenoid uncomfortably close. I did...

Something about shorting next to fuel seems unwise...
