Why would a regular 1600 engine drive shaft not slide through the top portion of an AE (1970-71) case? |

Are you talking about the distributor itself, or the drive shaft below it? |

Like chrisflstf, I'm also a little confused. But here's my input anyway !
1. When I disassembled my original 1971 for the first time in 2016, even with the case halves split and the correct distributor drive shaft tool, I could not free/remove the brass distributor drive shaft. I got that out using a block of wood and a hammer. On re-assembly, it fit fine and operates fine to this day.
2. If you're talking about the shaft on the distributor itself, I've seen that the shaft O-ring causes a minor problem. Oil that up and tap it down using a block of wood.
Did you have any issues REMOVING the distributor or distributor drive shat - whichever your post was about? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I'm sorry. I was too quick to post my question. I should written: Why would a regular 1600 engine distributor drive shaft not slide through the top portion of an AE (1970-71) case without a tap or two on the top end?
I was asking about the shaft, not the distribuor itself.
I should have also said I was test fitting the drive shaft in the case before merging the two case halves to see if was fine. I wanted to test it because I had the same problem Cusser had when I removed it. So now it's still a bit snug at the top but falls into its bottom hole freely once it clears the snug part. |

OK, much clearer now. ALL - remember that we're not there looking over your shoulder - we only know what you have written !

You should be fine. I like to install the distributor drive shaft and the distributor (to hold it in place before I mate the case halves). Yes, one needs to know how to set for #1 TDC...
Don't forget the washers under the drive shaft, or the little spring under the distributor ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. So many machining variables over the years. Nothing to worry about. Make sure you have the washers underneath as mentioned above. _________________ Barndoor Mafia

Have seen the upper bore of the case to need a little sanding to remove corrosion where the distributor goes. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
