I am getting ready to test my stash of regulators and have this oddity. I’m hoping someone might be able to identify it and its application.
It has the classic black painted housing with white putty over the cover screw. The date code is 1U or January 1963 which I’m thinking is too early for 1500cc optioned Bus which is what my initial thought was. It has the mounts for 12 volt not on top of the generator. It appears to be 6 volt?
It does not have a part number and has the following terminal markings: B+, 61, D-, DF. and on the mounting bracket: RS/VA 200/6/3(might be an 8 )
A couple of unusual features are the plastic insulator block on the D- terminal and the cable that runs from there to a soldered point on the circuit board.
I’m not sure what this came from. I’ve only worked on VW’s but this could have come to me loose. It’s been in my stash for a long time. Any help greatly appreciated.

Well the Type 3 existed in Europe at that time, no generator mount regulators on those.
The VW Type 3 parts book shows the 311 903 801 regulator, which is also what my copy of the 1966 VW1600 Type 3 Owner's Service Manual was still listing. With a system specification nominal output of 200 watts, 6V, at 2650RPM. (a note on the title page of that book says it is "technically correct" for AUG 65 to AUG 66 but many details are applicable beyond that date range)
Since I had the book open, I scanned the photo showing the generator and regulator connections and stuck it in the Gallery:

RS/VA 200/6/3 is indeed the correct Bosch 6V regulator for the early VW 1500 Type 3's. The VW 1500's were imported into Canada for the 1962 model year, so the unit could be from one of those cars. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"
