What will the world look like twenty years after the great apocalypse, when nature has slowly begun to reclaim the place that man once occupied?
It will probably remind you of what it looks like in the forest outside Töcksfors, where the Ivansson brothers once ran their successful car scrapyard. When Ivansson's car scrapyard in Båstnäs started in 1956, Norway was a country with a squeezed economy. The country's oil deposits were still undiscovered, and in order to benefit domestic trade, cars were subject to high tariffs, something the Ivansson brothers would use to their advantage. The gravel road, which today is mainly used by smugglers, was an important shipping route into Sweden, and near Båstnäs there was a customs station that carefully controlled the traffic.
A Norwegian who wanted to buy a cheap car in Sweden then had two choices: either you could dismantle your new acquisition into three parts – engine, body and wheel axles – and bring the parts to Norway on separate occasions, or you simply took Norwegian number plates and screwed on your car from Ivanssons before steering it through customs without interruption.
For a long time, the car scrapyard did well and the brothers became known far beyond Töcksfors, but when the Norwegians began to have a better economy at the end of the 1970s, it was also the beginning of the end for the car scrapyard in Båstnäs. The business was scaled down and in the 80s the brothers finally lost their scrap license. Since then, about a thousand cars spread over two hectares have been abandoned in the forest of Värmland, to the great joy of all ruin tourists.
Wandering around among the endless rows of scrap cars is a colorful and highly surreal experience that every year draws a large number of tourists from all over the world. There is no signage and most likely no insurance applies in the area. However, it is no problem to get to the scrapyard, the gravel road from Töcksfors is in good condition and there are many parking options on site.
Well worth a visit if you travel btw Gothenburg-Oslo or so.

| Nice boneyard tour, there does not appear to be much left to salvage out of there. But it is nice to look at. I have been to several old car salvage yards here in North Carolina and they are always fun to walk through. Thanks for the tour. |

They're almost as rusty as your typical upstate New York weed eaters.
They're only slightly less rusty than ten year old cars I see in the Price Chopper parking lot.
It looks like that yard still gets plenty of foot traffic.
