Putting my car away for winter hibernation after very limited use.
Is it required or necessary to change the oil strainer when changing 400 mile oil? |

No. You can clean the screen and replace it for the winter storage. _________________ I have learned over the years.

| I keep an extra strainer & plenty of gaskets. Pull the strainer & throw in the spare. Then I clean the used one & have it ready for next time. It works out great & gives me the opportunity to keep an eye on things. |

No reason to change the oil with only 400 miles on it. simply get the engine good and fully warmed up, then store the car.
What is bad is a car stored that had the engine last run without being fully warmed up immediately prior to storage. An engine stopped when it is not fully warmed up, a short run, will have moisture in it, but if you get her out and run her hard, get her warmed up hot, do a long highway run, that moisture that has accumulated will be driven out of the engine, and its oil. _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

| If you can fill the gas tank and add stabilizer. This will preserve the fuel and prevent lots of moisture from accumulating in the tank. I would also disconnect the battery and give it a full charge. |

Do you mean it's been rebuilt, and now has 400 miles on it? Then yes, change oil and clean screen.
If you mean it's an older engine, and you only put 400 miles on it this year, then I agree with posts... get it fully warm, then park it. Change the oil when you bring it out of hibernation. No need to clean the screen at that time, but no harm, either. _________________ Current Fleet:

I also get confused by many posts that do not provide enough information. I'm NOT a mind reader, and I typically just ignore such posts.
Sorry if I cannot remember somebody's post from 2 years ago about what year, what engine, what carburetor, what distributor he has.... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Original H engine '67 bug, rebuilt to an unknown degree at some point before my 3 year stewardship. Pushrod tubes are still shiny.

Thank you for your feedback. Should really work on your mind reader skills, they'd be a hit at house parties. |
