Finally registering our 1965 Sedan...
We have owned our '65 Sunroof Sedan since 1996 as the second owners. Original owner ordered/purchased car new at Niello VW/Porsche in Sacramento, California. Once we drove 60 miles each day to work, we now drive it two to three times per week to the store or out on a trek through the back roads of our county. Painted once back in 2002 with Glasurit L456 Ruby Red it still sports the original 1200cc 40hp, we are now considering 83mm Big Bore rebuild. The car has 82,000 miles on it and except for 12v Porsche generator and Koni Shocks, it is pretty stock and original. Always garaged, we have run Mobil 1 10w-30, Swepco 201 and 89 octane fuel with occasional Marvel Oil in the tank. Except for a failure of a newly installed condenser, our '65 has never let us down out on the road. Checkout below several of it's options.
Funny, we frequently received stories and compliments from others who had a Volkswagen once just like ours...except it was yellow and a 1972! They really loved that car and wished they didn't sell it. We enjoy people enjoying old Volkswagens.
In 2008.
In 2022.
a Few Options.
Installing new Koni Shocks...great addition.

Hi everyone,
About 8 months ago I was lucky enough to get my hands on this ol girl for $1. She’s all original and runs great and I call her Jade. I am the 3rd owner. Besides some suspicion and engine work I plan to keep her in original form.

Hi all,
I’d like to add my late Nov ‘65 Java Green Deluxe Sunroof to the registry residing in Bedfordshire, England (UK)! It sure isn’t in a concourse condition or massively original any longer, but still surviving none-the-less!
My aim is to give it some love and restore as much back to original styling, but won’t be a stock example - enough to be enjoyed by my young family and 4 year old son. I’ve been reading and learning a lot on The Samba from afar as is my first bug, but still lots to find out!
I picked it up back in August 2022 (10th owner!) showing 55,314 on the clock - but I’m certain it has been round the clock at least once due to MOT history mileage stamps. It had some work done in 2003 by a previous owner including replacement floor pans, heater channels, 12v conversion, and front end repaint (photo documentation in a folder that came with the car). Just before I bought it, it had an engine replacement with a refurbished 1600cc.
I’ve already picked up some used steels to refurbish and replace the aftermarket wheels, and the bodywork is on the list to give a bit of a polish!

Nice to see a '65 registry. There are some beautiful cars here! Sadly, mine will never be as nice as some of these. I bought mine in 2019, it's my second '65. I owned the first one briefly during a streak of owning various VWs when I owned a foreign car repair shop in the early 70s.
This is the '65 when I bought it in 2019.
I fixed it up a little and drove it like this for a couple of years.
I took it down for paint and a new interior in July, 2022.
Here is it's current status, January 2023. I make a little progress every week.
There is a thread here about what I've been doing with the car.

Nice to see the '65 registry perk back to life.

Mine won't be as nice as some of these either, but hey, at least we're in the game and puttering down the road with a German 4-cylinder out back, yeah? _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom)

I've been out of an air-cooled VW for about a decade now, since my beloved '69 Beetle (my first car) was lost to an accident. I finally grew tired of looking at all my spare parts collecting dust without a car to go into, so I went on the hunt. I found this '65 just up the coast from me being sold without an engine, but with a few notable upgrades (front disc conversion, 12V, upgraded "built" transaxle). Once I got it home, I freshened up the 1600DP from my old '69 and got to it. There's still some work to be done, but I can't wait to get out on the road. It just feels "right" to be wrenching on a Beetle again.

Should we have an actual registry of titled vehicles with the chassis number?
I think we should up the game here and have an actual list of who owns what specific chassis number.
Thoughts?

I thought about it, but I guess it's a privacy concern. It's so easy to look up an owners details with just a vin or tag number _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, cam, heads, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

Yeah, I'm not worried about who's got which VIN, I just wanna see the cars. In fact, we're still waiting for Igherb to post his
People can just publish their production month if they're familiar with how to look that up.
Maybe we better have Everett amend the title to call it the '65-Only Owners' Photos Thread _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom)

I tried to update my earlier post, but too late to edit it.
Here are photos of my '65 after its mechanical refurb and new paint and interior. When I bought it it had a '67 engine and had been (poorly) converted to 12 volts. I tried to return it to "stockish" while retaining the engine and electrical system.

Cool! Last week I went through this thread again and I was wondering if/when you might post pics of the updated product _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom)

Hey thanks for the thread recommend wdfifteen!
This is our 65 sedan we just purchased. Sitting for 20 years. I found it in Virginia on a tucked away side street.
It was sold to a man here in VIrginia from a lady in San Francisco. Lived most of its life there.
The ad from 2000 stated that the bug was all original with a complete mechanical restoration.
The body is very straight with some patina. Interior is in fair to good condition. Bug has had a 12 volt upgrade. I do not see ANY ID numbers for the engine. Would this be a replacement case? I'm old but I think I can see a vw symbol on the bottom of the engine.
Here are the ID numbers from the trunk.
115 495 667
1140
480 700

I guess it’s time to add mine. I’ve had it about 3 months now and it has earned the name “spot” because it definitely marks its spot. I bought it from the son of its previous owner after he passed. Before he bought it someone gave it a flippers resto. Paint is in early orange peel. It has a weird aftermarket 1600 DP, but it seems to run fine after a valve adjustment. OG color was green. So I have fallen in love with my little mutt and he has found a forever home, at least he was cheap!

Great looking car, Mike. It'd be a definite keeper for me!
Kind of brings back memories. I had a black '63 with a red interior, looked a lot like your car.
I'm lovin' the variety of '65s that show up here. |

P
icked up a 65 yesterday, pretty nice really needs some TLC. The PO was really not kind to this car, his repairs are to say the least crude but I will get it in better shape and enjoy it. Needs diffent rims and tires and bumpes as they where not with the car, it runs OK but needs some carb. work and maybe a new wiring harness. Photos to follow soon.
