The banner above the pumps- "SB billiger": "SB stands for the German words Selbst billiger, meaning "pump it yourself cheaper". The gas station is the AGIP brand, the Italian oil company Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli. The logo is a 6-legged fire-breathing dog.

The streetside sign of 65.9 would be the price in Deutschmark-Pfennige per liter of the basic regular grade. That converts to 76 cents per gallon in 1972, a bit over twice as much as for US regular prices of the era.

Nearly, but not quite correct: "SB" means "Selbst Bedienung" - "self-service", so "self service" is cheaper.

Ah yes, now I remember- thanks for the correction. I've not been getting some of the German phrases right recently. Confused
