|
|
I’m bringing my 62 back to life and decided to go with rubber mats like the original. Unfortunately, no one has the rear rubber mats in gray so I will need to find an alternative until I hopefully find one.
I have the old original which is all torn up and nasty. I might just tape it up for now but it kind of ruins it all when I put all
That effort to make the car nice.
Any ideas?

Have you tried deep cleaning the mat using steam and/or some citrus-based cleaner? It looks to still be in pretty good shape and that one big tear will be mostly hidden down between the tunnel and the seat.
Maybe a set of coco or sisal mats can help hide the damage and protect the front mat as well.

It’s completely torn up to 3 pieces.
I am thinking of getting some cheap gray carpet from Home Depot and tracing the shape of the mat on it so I can use that temporarily. _________________ 1962 Beetle

A scrub brush and some 409 cleaner may make that matt look much better.
then put some carpets over it to protect it. orignal is always cool.

Buy a second set of front mats in gray and use the old rear mats as a template to cut a piece for the rear out of the new front mats. Color and texture will then match the front. _________________ Tom

I've had good results using lexol vinylex on rubber mats after a good clean. it makes them supple again. other rubber cleaners and rejuvenators are available

Im guessing your front is from WW. Maybe clean, and run your og rear til WW gets the rears back in stock. Then at least they would match down the road. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

That's actually not a bad idea. _________________ 1962 Beetle

I decided for now to just get some cheap floor mat from Home Depot and use my old rubber mat as a template to cut the mat.
Worked really nice. Simple solution for now.

This thread has brought up a very good idea. One can get a very nice carpet with some inexpensive carpet and some brains and elbow grease to cut it into a nice shape
I wager that this carpet cost very little compare to a ready made one.
And it looks great too.

| Nice solution even if only temporary. Maybe use that as padding under the grey mat when it eventually is available. |

It was $27.50 at Home Depot but it’s much thinner than the ones I got from WW.
