if you havent heard of a desaxe engine then google it, I hadnt until yesterday. aaaand now I have something to add to what I want to try to do to a vw engine... damnit!
the cliff notes is that its an offset cylinder engine and by moving the cylinder in the direction of crank rotation the connecting rod is most straight after the crank has reached TDC, not at TDC. so this would take some of the compression strokes force off of the bearings and put more force on the crank as its in a "better" position.
really interesting thing is that instead of the 4 cycles of the engine being equal 180 , it changes it to a longer downward strokes and shorter upward strokes. ie and as per what I'd read 185 , 175 , 185 , 175 ...
it seems that the average offset ranges from 4- 12mm.
I dont think it'd be to incredibly hard to move the vw cylinders 4-5 mm?
also to a small degree this can be accomplished by the offset of the connecting rod too, which if you think about it, might have something to do with the claims some have made about running the vw pistons or rods in the "improper" direction.
from what ive read it seems you see this more in motorcycle engines but there were some engines in the early 1900's that did this.
now how about changing the valve and ignition timing for this?? _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug
An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't. |
