I am getting old and can't remember the orientation of these things when I took them out. Any Ideas?

This thread has a VW pic (the second one) showing how it is stuffed. It's apparently NOT "pointy end forward" as you might expect.

Not sure if these are equal to the later material, but if it is - maybe not re-install? At the same time you may not have the "vents" that allows humidity to be absorbed llike the same later...

A lot of the 70's cars rust from inside out in the C-pillar area due to the "death foam" that you can search and see a lot of pictures / text of in here on TheSamba.

I went back through ny archival photos and came across this one of the pad before I pulled them out.
