Pulled engine, cleaned up, replaced cylinders and pistons, had heads redone. Got it back in and it ran great. On a test run I heard a pop and was leaking major oil. Was right by home so got it there. Did a turnover and oil looks like it's coming out from the driver side of engine. The push rod tubes feel secure but there is oil around the cylinders. Anyone know what the pop may have been? I will try to look down there while some turns it over to see the leak. I'm thinking I need to pull the head and cylinders on that side to investigate. I think that can be done with engine in.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also check for a jammed oil pressure relief valve which could send cold thick oil under full pressure to the cooler and blow out a seal.

You will have to pull the engine to do this. Good luck

Agreed.

You can pull the shroud & start it up. Let it run for a just a little bit to inspect for the leak.

Thanks for your replies.
I was able to pull shroud without pulling engine. Started and oil leaked around oil cooler. Gaskets as you said.
Pulled cooler and ran air through inlet towards back. Flowed good and tried front. Minimal. Tried back again and much less. Crud in there? Either way will get new cooler.
Think I put on wrong gaskets (picture) so will make sure get correct ones for new cooler.
Also, I removed oil pressure relief nut, spring/plunger came right out so not seized. Surprised oil wasn't in there but engine hasn't run for 6 months so maybe normal.
Advice here appreciated.

If you are going to install a new oil cooler, might as well install an oil filter pump. The CB Maxi 2 ones are the best being made today. Since the cooler seems to have clogged up it is possible there is a lot of gunk in the oil sump. If so would only drive in town 15-30 minutes at a time with at least 30 minutes between drives. That will loosen the crud up slowly, so it does not avalanche loose suddenly. Check often to see if oil has gone dirty on the dipstick and change it when it does show dirty or every 50 miles.
We fried several off the shelf old used engines till figuring out that they need to be run short trips in town till cleaned out and the moving parts like the pistons, rings, and cylinders need to polish back out.
