I was just wondering if you have to drop the motor out to change the generator on 68 beetle. I have the manual but it's in my other car that is in the shop right now. Thanks for the help. |

No . Pull the deck lid off . pull the carb off . Pull the throttle cable out of the fan housing and take all the fresh air tubes off . Unscrew the screws at each enf of the fan shroud . There may be a few more parts I forgot but its not a bad job . Take your time and do it right . |

The hardest part is getting the 36mm nut off the cooling fan. _________________ 72 Super Beetle

Just did this myself, its really fun
Do what Old Ben said, then remove the following:
The Oil Cooler shroud has a nut holding it on. Its towards the top of the doghouse and to the left a bit. Remove nut and pull the shroud out.
The bottom oil cooler shroud was sticking into a vent at the bottom of thye doghouse. There is 1 bolt holding this on. Remove it and the vent will pull up and out. Dont loose the rubber seal on the top.
Next is the thermostat stuff. If you reach down behind the doghouse, coming in from the right, at the bottom you will feel/see a spring. Pull the spring one way or the other and unhook it.
Then the control arm has to come off. Its the bar the runs along the bottom of the doghouse. At either end it is held on by little clips. I stuck a flat head screw driver in the side of the clip and just pulled them off.
Now there is also a rod that comes up from under the engine and hooks onto the louvers(flaps) inside the doghouse. I'm not sure how to get that off just yet. However I was able to pull the doghouse up enough to get the generator/fan out of the doghouse with that rod still connected. But now thinking about it I may have destroyed the thermostat under the engine doing it that way . I'll have to check on it.
Smooth sailing after that. The 32mm nut wasn't too bad. I sprayed penetrating oil on it and left it sit for awhile before I tried to remove it. Hardest part was holding the shaft on the other side while turning the nut. I used a big pair of locking pliers as described in the "Idiots Guide".
Hope that helps and good luck |
