Ok, So I'm running a solex 30/31 in my bus, and i could potentially switch to a 30-pict1, and I wanted to know which one would give me the best MPG, and I know I'd lose some performance switching to the 30 Pict, buy my gas milage is pretty bad...and everything seems to be in tune, and all good, so I'm guess it's a weird Carb. I'm in a '67 Bus, with a SP engine, and Gas milage has been pretty dang low...so what do you think? With all this Iraq Jazz getting started, I decided I better try for better gas milage, just incase Gas prices go nuts...Peace! |

I don't really think you will lose power going from one of those 30/31's back to an original 30.... I would get a 30 pict 1 or 2 the 30 pict-3's are quirky( adjustment wise) like the 34 pict3 is...
You can run a 125 main and even go up to a 127.5 in them if your engine can handle it.
Do you have any spare jets to mess around with??? Thats the cool thing about the old 30 pict one on a single port.... you can just pull the bowl drain plug and the jet is right there.... easy to make quick changes on the road and see what feels best...
You never said how bad the milage was? Did you change the plugs yet??? I would when you first switch carbs, make sure you start off with clean not black sooty ones.... |

Yea, I replaced the plugs, and it made a world of a differnce, i believe my gas milage increased to about 16-17...this still sucks in a '67 bus! So what's the deal? Timings right on(has electronic ignition) and so are the valves etc. Everythings golden internally...just don't know the problem, why so crappy? Should be 20-25? I have my 30/31, I upped it to a 122.5(instead of 120) but i took it back to 120, and changed plugs, and things go better..it's cold weather outside now, and so I'm not really worried about temperature, I just need good gas milage, cuase i'm going on some roadtrips, and need to fix this mother! But what's the main jet in a 30? do You have any idea? My carbs in my attic, but I do have a 30-Pict-1, I'll try switching, and see how things go. ok, I'm outy. Peace!
Any more Info Would ROCK!

Maybe you jet size is actually too small and you are having to give it more gas (throttle) to get down the road...?
I have always run at least a 125 in a 1600 sp and even a 127.5 when using an 009 and a header...
And from 127.5 to 132 in a DP....
If you had more power from the main jet it might give you better milage? sounds backwards I know but hey, try it anyway...
what have you got to loose????? |

I have a 1600dp in my bus using a 34mm and sometimes a 31mm carb. Both get about the same mileage (19 city 21 hwy). I still have my redux boxes, stock exhaust and heater boxes. In my carbs I have a 127.5 main jet in both and a 155 idle jet as well in both. The only real difference I feel in the two carbs is the 34 has a better top end on it then the 31. Both take off about the same though.
I too am trying to get that infamous 26 mpg on the freeway the everyone else seems to be getting. The first problem that I need to tackle is a heat issue but this site has given me a lot of tips on how to fix that. I especially would like to think Keifernet for all of his help. |

thanks guys! Yea, i know what you're saying about the heat problem, that tends to be a big issue with the buses...I found that the thicker oil helps a ton! plus a smaller fan belt...helps too. But most of all, Points and timing make the biggest Diff. It's hard to get the 009's right ,and i know everyones got them! But I've heard that you should keep it at around 6-7 degrees BTDC, or just to the left of 7.5 That works great for me. well, I got a lot of homework, college is a pain! But I gotta do it...I'll get to playing with the bus this weekend, then I'll update all y'all...Peace! |
