Could he perhaps chamfer the holes and put some O ring in?
Better yet, I will see about a set of valve covers, when I go bone yarding. Or someone donate some. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Good god no . . . I mean I like Owen and all, but he couldn't afford me . The store is Ernie's - we've been friends many years, and have done a bit of business together and of course sailing. He still plays a mean ukulele and sings my favorite Tahitian songs
Hey LV -
The reason I suggested the FI seals is because they are re-usable and have far more compliance than things like copper seal-washers. Those are excellent for some stuff, but they require more precision mating surfaces than the aftermarket covers offer, and more torque to 'crush' for a seal than the castings can stand without problems. When you look closely at those covers in hand, and do a bit of measuring, you may find the thickness of the castings are different from hole to hole on the same cover, or worse from one side of the same hole to the other side!
FI seals live on or at the heads. They survive plenty of heat and stay flexible for years. And copper washers are excellent for hot applications. They just can't be re-used, and unless used in an application allowing enough torque to crush them down, they will leak. I've dealt with this subject a million times on big T1 street and drag motors since the 70's and know what works. I have a pair of tall aftermarket covers on my dry-sumped 81 Vanagon stroker motor in the Manx buggy. I did the FI seal treatment on those covers when I built the motor in 1987. The covers have been off a few times, but are still perfectly dry today using the original seals. That car is driven both on the street and at the dunes in blazing hot temperatures. I think there’s about 22,000 hard miles on that motor – still runs real nice too.
I'm a leak Nazi – I’ll go to comical lengths to solve any and all leaks in anything. . . it must have something to do with a serene life punctuated by a few sheer terrors at sea |
Don't know what I would do with out you guys. Thanks again. I just got some gasket material from the hardware store as a temporary fix. I'm gona look in to those FI seals now. I kicked the heat up this morning and could smell a faint odor of burning oil I gotta get on this quick! I figure once I fix the problem the residual oil will burn off and go away. _________________ 82 Air-cooled Westy (Lola)...My other vehicle is a subway. |

if you want to work out an exchange.. (i'd need to have a set so it'd not get funked up inside, but they can be leaky bolt ons. VCs and bails (hopefully they'll come out *optimistic)
drop me an email and I can get a set in the post from Syracuse, NY tomorrow likely be to you by monday.
no cash, just exchange, each takes care of 1way shipping.. can always exchange some beers later while east coast camping.

You got it man. Only one thing, I have AMC heads and I'm not 101% sure that the sock covers will fit right. If its ok I'll send you mine after I confirm that yours fit. If they don't I'll send yours back. Whadaya say? I'll send you an Email with my address.
