So what is the vote? I need to cut the dash to put in a new CD/Radio. Should I cut the dash to make the fit or not. The car is stock and I have kept it that way in the restore. Or does someone know of a unit that will fit without cutting. |

I don't like the way a non stock radio looks and the car will go down in value (my 68 had one when I bought it). I replaced it with the original when I replaced the dash facing. I'd put it in the glove box (they make special glove boxes for this), mount it below the ashtray, or go with a remote system. Good luck! |

On the one hand, it's your car and you should personalize to your taste. But if you plan on selling it one day, a potential buyer might be bothered by the cut in the dash. I know I would! You could try mounting it under the dash or in the glove box _________________ 2019 Golf Alltrack, '65 Ghia Coupe Restoration in Progress |

As Chip Foose once put it, nothing "dates" a car like an aftermarket stereo. I'd hide it, if I were you. |

I have a cd deck mounted under the dash behind the ash tray. It's sitting snug up against the metal. From my seat I can see the screen and easliy reach it. CD's go in and out no problem. It also has a remote...but I have found I don't need it. From outside the car it can't be seen. |

I had the same question a month ago. Granted you can decide as you like but here is what i did: I bought an old FM/AM radio on e-bay that fits (it's not the original Sapphire that my 69 Ghia had but it is old-school enough). I have an iPod; I bought an i-trip (30 dollars) that allows me to listen to the iPod in the car using the FM radio. This way I can listen to all the music I have on CDs (you can download them on a computer and then put the music on the iPod) without a. Having to install a CD player by cutting the dashboard and b. having to install the CD player somwehre else. I find that it is a good solution.
One last thing, you need a radio that has FM not just AM in order to use i-Trip (this is part of the reason why i did not look for an original 69 sapphire: it's AM only).
Hope this helps. |

Are you sure? I've had a '69 with AM/FM in it. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

unless you get a late model radio with fm multiplex you will not be able to hear stereo. the early models were monorula; one channel; one speaker. |

I think that the original radio for a 69 Ghia was a Sapphire VII which is AM only. Here is where I found the info:

That list is not quite complete. VW had 3 models made by Motorola in 1969 for the U.S. market:
Sapphire VII model 9SMV-6 AM 6 or 12 volt - I haven't ever figured out why they offered a switchable 6/12 volt radio in 1969??
Sapphire IX model 9SMV AM 12 volt
Sapphire XIII model 3VW5017 AM 12 volt
Accessories brochures for 69 also list the Sapphire X AM-FM originally from 1968, and two Playtape models, also originally from 68. If you bought your 69 late, you could probably get it with any of the 4 available 1970 Sapphires which included 3 different AM models (all labeled Sapphire XI) and AM-FM Sapphire XII model 1VW20. Dealers installed whatever they had available, including aftermarket radios like Blaupunkt, Audiovox and Panasonic. _________________ ~~~~~~~~
