Unfortunately, the problem is likely on the inside, which will mean pulling the engine out again. However, your clutch cable might just be that far out of adjustment. I hope it's that simple.
By the way, the Super in SuperBeetle has nothing to do with the drivertrain.

Make sure the idle isn't too high.Too high an idle can cause your problems with grinding. Also check the shift rod bushing under the shifter.Good luck.

if it were changing well b4 doin the clutch then it'll be the linkage and clutch cable adjustment that needs checking.
2 check if it is the box get it in 1st and accelerate to 15mph then come off the gas.if it pops outta gear then the box is on its way out. but due to it being ifficult on 1st and 3rd n not 2nd and 4th then i'd say it were the linkage.

might be pressure plate not releasing enough off of the clutch itself, did you put in a new pressure plate when you did the clutch as well? just a thought, had the same problems and symptoms before and that was the culprit. Good luck! p.s. I doubt that it is the transmission, don't give up hope yet, it's usually the simple things!

Sounds like the shifter needs adjusting now. Try loosening up the shifter and moving it just a hair, tighten down and see if it will go into first.Good luck.
